The Wrestlemania 26 speculation/fantasy booking threads have got me thinking... here are two guys who don't have obvious programs for Wrestlemania but are significant enough to deserve a place on the card, and they might actually be able to help each other.
We know Rey's working until 'Mania before taking time off for surgery. Considering he obviously hasn't got many years left to his in-ring career, and has missed a couple 'Manias already, it seems a waste to just shove him into MitB or something. He really ought to get a singles match. Rey's big feud of late has been with Batista, but those two are at the point in their angle where they're regularly having matches against each other on Smackdown, which generally means we're not going to see the two of them going at it being built up as a PPV draw. Besides, Big Dave's probably moving on to a world title feud.
And of the other major Smackdown guys for Rey to fight... he's obviously not going up against The Streak. Jericho's presumably going after either Edge or DX. Punk's free, but Punk vs. Mysterio has been done before, and I'm not sure it'd really do anything for either of them to get a win over one another. Morrison's always a possibility, considering their fantastic match last year, but again, I'm not sure what either of them would gain from Mysterio putting him over twice.
Meanwhile, on RAW... Sheamus is almost certainly dropping the title before Wrestlemania. Probably at the Rumble. Even so, unless he's completely buried in the next couple months, his unexpected championship reign is still going to have brought him enough momentum that he should be somewhere at 'Mania. Of course, he could always sink back into the midcard, but that would be a waste of a push. The major main eventers all have bigger and better things to do than feud with him; Triple H/Sheamus is being speculated, but it's hard to even imagine that being more than a five minute squash, which wouldn't help either man (though it could function as a Wrestlemania 12 homage, where Triple H plays Ultimate Warrior to the guy he pegs to be the next Triple H).
For that matter, letting pretty much any of the regular main event guys beat Sheamus up would just hammer home the idea that he's out of their league. Similarly, I think it's too early for him to lose to another rising young guy like Kofi or Morrison; at this point, Sheamus isn't credible enough for a victory by one of those guys to elevate them into the main event, since no one really thinks of Sheamus as a *real* main eventer.
So, Mysterio is just right as an opponent for Sheamus: he's higher up the card than anyone Sheamus has gotten a clean win over thus far, but he's also not one of the top guys who WWE feels needs to be protected. A win over Mysterio could do wonders for Sheamus (especially if he can take credit for putting Rey out for months), but even if Sheamus is a failure as a star and tumbles back down the card like Kozlov, Rey's overness and his whole underdog persona will keep the loss from really hurting him in the long run.
Anyway, I think it'd make for a good match. Thoughts?
