Well, first, again, I'd like to thank everyone for their participation and support of the Billboard Hot 100 tournament. Truly it was a very fun (if not very time consuming) experience. Of the more than 1,000 songs that hit #1, we came upon a tie at the finish, between Another Brick in the Wall and We Didn't Start the Fire. A fitting end, perhaps? It also makes me question how the outcome would have been had I made the Final Four be a 3-day poll between all four songs (including Beat It and Another One Bites the Dust). Would the tie have been broken?
If anyone's at all interested in any of the stats I have left from the tournament (full brackets, vote results, etc), please send me a PM.
In regards to the next tournament, here's what's going on:
There is a bit of vocal support for the "rock" tournament, which is something I'm quite eager to do, however, I figured I'd provide options. I'm limited to what charts are easily and readily available for use online, as I don't have a Billboard subscription, so I don't have access to more obscure charts. In addition, there's more than 1 "Rock" chart. Here's what we could choose from:
Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks - Been around since '81, just shy of 400 songs have been #1. On the downside, there's not as much date information of when songs where #1, which... isn't a huge deal, really... less stuff for me to put after the videos.
Billboard Alternative Songs - Formerly called "Modern Rock Tracks", been around since '88
Billboard Rock Songs - An 'Airplay" rock chart, only been out since last year. The poll would likely just be one topic, since all the songs have been in the past 12 months.
The other non-Rock options:
Billboard Hot 100 Airplay - Slightly different to the Hot 100 we just had. Probably not worth doing until... fairly far down the line, as it ranks the most played radio songs. A few notables that weren't on the Hot 100 we just did, which is based on sales. Hot 100 Airplay started in '84, so it'd be significantly shorter than the last poll.
Mainstream Top 40 - I have no idea what's really different between this and Hot 100, because it's what's been "detected" on Pop stations. Meaning... maybe if there's a commercial with a song, it counts it? I have no idea, it's been around since '92, and has similarly "pop"-style music.
Billboard Hot Dance Airplay - Dance music, what DJs play, chart's been around since 2003. Pop stuff, with a lot of "dance" influence.
Hot Adult Contemporary Chart - Kinda like pop, just generally easier to listen to? Another long chart, been out since 1961. A sampling of current stuff that tops the charts is Taylor Swift and Colbie Callait. I saw some Air Supply and Billy Joel in the 1980 list.
Which do you guys want me to run?
