I wouldn't say it sucks now, but it's not as good as it used to be.
That said, the first few seasons are damn near untouchable when it comes to cartoons. It's in my top 5 of all time. I f***ing love Spongebob.

Spongebob will forever go down a legend and an icon in the cartooning business, even if the episodes had a slight dip in quality.
Despite the critiques of people clearly 20-30 years older than the intended audience.

Despite the critiques of people clearly 20-30 years older than the intended audience. Then those critiques must be coming from senior citizense because the intended audience is teenagers and twenty somethings. Legitimate kid's shows don't use jokes like this: "C'mon Patrick, let's go home. Sandy told me not to go in there." "When are you gonna learn SpongeBob? No means yes!"

Any cartoon with a scene that references Julien Donkey Boy is a legend in my eyes.

Saw one of the newer episodes recently and both my fiancee and I couldn't believe how bad it was as we usually love this show. Cool thing is the guy who does SpongeBob's voice is the guy from Smashing Pumpkins Tonight, Tonight filmclip.

Never liked the show. I'd sooner watch a steaming bowl of shit than that irritating sponge and his dumbass friend.

It was good back then and it's still good now IMO, there's not a current cartoon that can touch it. Can't believe it's been one for a whole decade already, that's just hard to believe!

As an old-school Nick-Toons fan, who loved the original Ren and Stimpy, Doug, Rugrats, and even Rocco's Modern Life... I've never been able to get the whole Spongebob phenomenon. My only guess is that it came out right as I was getting to the age where I stopped watching Nickelodeon, and the network seems to have gone straight down to hell in the years since Spongebob arrived on their schedule. That's pretty much how I feel too. I've always perceived Spongebob Squarepants as a more juvenile imitation of what Ren & Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life already did. But then, I haven't had cable since '01, so there's a lot of TV that I missed out on but I frankly feel better for having missed it all.
