In the WWE, they are currently banking on an eventual RAW guest host appearance by Bret Hart or The Rock (possibly on January 4th) to turn around their lack luster ratings and start the Wrestlemania build up.
In TNA, they are currently banking on Hulk Hogan to turn things around for them, and probably more has beens to come. (Hell, they are rumored to have signed Scott f***ing Hall.)
Hogan, Hart, and Rock haven't been active in years. In 10 years, what happens when the major wresting companies need a quick ratings boost? Are they still going to rely on these same stars? Because honestly, in 10 years I don't think Randy Orton, Batista, or John Cena will draw in the big crowds in a one time guest spot like those other 3.
What I'm saying is, wrestlins present is currently relying entirely too much on the past, but what happens when that past is even further away?

I think WWE (far more than TNA) is solidly building and establishing guys. Bringing in some legends for a ratings boost has been done many times, in NWA with special referees, WCW brought in Andre for an appearance, Nick Bockwinkel and Dory Funk. WWE has brings in guys for the HOF and Cyber Sunday in in the past as well as guest appearances and short runs.
Rock would just be for one night, and would be built as a massive selling point anyway, in the same way Bruno did occasional appearances in the 80s to boost a gate and pop a rating. Bret would be for a short angle, a la Hogan's last two runs, just something different for the fans.
I won't get into what I think of TNA currently. I'm in a poor mood as it is.

I guess this means when the past is too distant, ROH will tahe over. Probably not but it is a nice thought!

They are depending on the stars of the last wrestling boom. Eventually WWE won't be able to fall back on those stars. Both WWE and TNA are establishing new stars but they are doing it very slowly and not nearly as well as WWE use to in the 80s and 90s.
