How huge would that have been compared to now ? I think for them to do Bret vs. Vince now is a little too late. If would have been like if they were booking a Bruno/Superstar rematch on the undercard of Hogan/Warrior. If they were still able to Bret/Vince around the time Hogan and Shawn were feuding it would have still been huge. Besides the smart marks like us, the majority of the wrestling audience is a new crowd. When Vince got in the ring and said, "ok kids, many of you are too young to know the back story, he is a video package of why me and Bret don't like each other."

I think the stroke came after Bret did the DVD and Hall of Fame.

Was WM18 before his stroke? Yeah, a few months before his stroke.

The reason this match hasn't happened until now is because Bret never felt comfortable doing it until now. He turned down a guest referee gig offered to him for WM 18, and wouldn't even appear with the other Class of 2006 members of the Hall of Fame at WM 22.

I can't even begin to imagine the ovation. It would have easily destroyed Hogan's ovation. Bret Hart in Canada getting revenge on McMahon would have been the single biggest sustained pop in wrestling history.
