Who is the most overpushed (note that I didn't say "overrated"-ratings vary wildly and are extremely subjective) wrestler in regards to their abilities and popularity? Alot of people complain about the usual suspects-Great Khali, Jeff Jarrett, etc.-but I think, for the total length of his push and his actual abilities/overness, the award has to go--LEX LUGER. I can seriously remember one thing about him. He had the Torture Rack as a finsiher. Ask me to remember "that cool match he had", "the storyline where he gave the great promo", or "when all the kids had Lex T-shirts" and all I can think is "huh"? Double J was a good heel gimmick that got heat, although I don't personally think Jeff was a great ME heel like Flair, HHH, or Jericho. Khali sucked but had a very short ME run.
Luger, on the other hand, was treated as an ME for most of the 1990s. Hell, the guy was treated by McMahon like he was predestined to be the next Hogan! Luger was "Made in the USA" and the FANS chose Bret and HBK over him. He was an ME in WCW for years and DDP got louder pops than him as a midcarder. For the life of me, I never understood why the guy got the push he did over the years. If he was working today, I see him being stuck about where Chris Masters is now his entire career, which is where he belongs.

Luger deserved every bit of push he got from 1988-1991. Dude was awesome. He got the World Title too late and his reign was nothing special at all.
He never regained that level of awesomeness until late '96. Dude was OVER. The face of WCW in Sting's "absence". Won the belt from Hogan. Lost it 5 days later and that was it for Lex. He choked again. Pops were never the same. People moved on to the already wildly popular DDP. Sting came back. Goldberg!
Myself, I loved tweener Lex from when he came back to WCW in 1995. "Complete dick but Sting's best buddy" made for some fun stuff.

I can agree with the OP.Even as a young mark,I was never too fond of Luger.I was at Royal Rumble 94 and I actually booed when they'd start playing "Stars and Stripes Forever" because I didn't care about him and I wanted Bret to get it.

From 89-92, Luger was having great matches on a consistent basis and started carrying guys. He was over as well. So no.

But to answer your original question as to why Lex got pushed:

I don't think Luger was ever overpushed. Like others said, he deserved the pushes he got from aroung '88 to '92 because he was putting on great matches with top guys like Steamboat, Flair and Sting. I didn't like his run in WWF but even there I don't think he was pushed too much. Other than being WCW's top guy in '97, his last run in the company was pretty unevenful. Still though, Lex was massively over as a face and drew huge heat as a heel. Even in his last year with WCW he was getting huge pops.

Hogan taping in the rack.
Crowd went absolutely crazy with Luger.
That moment was f***ing awesome.
5 days later the rugs pulled.

No way. There are plenty of wrestlers over the years that had so much less than Luger had and were still pushed well. Fricken Tiger Jeet Singh, for example, would beat Terry Funk, Cactus Jack, and Atsushi Onita in death matches despite not having any discernible ability whatsoever. He didn't even have a good look, just his stupid looking "sword".
Luger at least had the look; he could wrestle with the right people.

I also loved half heel/face Lugar from 1995. I thought it made for amazing television. Here's a guy who's hanging out with the wrong crowd, yet his best friend is the top face in WCW.

Luger had some damn fine matches with Michael Hayes, Ricky Steamboat, Tommy Rich(!), Flair, Sting...even an oddly fun match with Stan Hansen.
Except for his brief moment as WCW champ in the late 90's, he just wasn't the same after his motorcycle accident prior to his WWF debut.

Luger doesn't hold a candle to Sid when it comes to major pushes that ended with nothing. I can't think of anyone who's blown more pushes than him.

I say Sid is the most overpushed. Not that good in the ring, and horrible at promos. Only guys like Shawn, Bret, Undertaker, and Flair could pull good matches out of him.

Luger was used just fine.
Over pushed? Erik Watts, Mike Von Erich, Cena(for a while...he has made some money in the long run), Jarrett in WCW's last two years, D'Lo Brown after the Nation of Domination, same for Mark Henry, Owen Hart (yup go ahead give it to me, it won't change my mind not a bit. As good as he was He was never that over)

I always loved Lex and for the most part he wasn't in the main event scene very much after like 95 (the one week title hotshot in 97 aside, which I think killed his career - actually not beating Yoko was the first start of the decline). He was my fav in all of wrestling from like 87-96. As others mentioned the dick heel thing yet being best friends with Sting was so great. You thought every week he was gonna turn on him yet never did.

Luger was the original 'Cena push'. Only Vince stuck stubbornly for 5 years on Cena being the top face, as he gave up on Lex 9 months in.

I'll go with Sid, never saw what everyone loved about him. Yeah he was big, yeah he could yell in the mic sometimes, but he wasn't nearly as talented as a lot of "Big Men" and his yelling promos made Scott Steiner sound like a professor at Cambridge.
