Now I know there's been lots of fusses about the whole independent contractor thing, and I doubt I should even post this so I'm going to leave the details rather vague.
I've been offered a year long guaranteed contract, and I can't afford to have a lawyer take a look at it. According to the terms of the contract, should I be released, I'd get paid off every dime for eveyr show I would've worked for the remainder of the contract. But should I quit, I have to pay the company the amount I would've made.
Is this normal in wrestling contracts? Does anyone have a clue?

I know nothing about contracts, but the "you paying them" part concerns me. I've never heard a wrestler mention such a thing before, but for all I know it could very well exist. Does the contract specify what happens if you get hurt and simply can't work shows for a certain amount of time? You should consider that factor before making your decision. Also, remember that wrestling is often a cut-throat business. If this company ever wanted you gone but didn't want to fire you, they could attempt to make you quit through underhanded but still legal means (taking away a push, making a guy shoot on you, simply not using you at all on shows, etc.).
If this is truly your dream and the contract guarantees you enough work in the year to pay your bills, I say go for it. Good luck!

Well it's nothing major, I'm not a wrestler, I'm a referee. I just am getting the same contract as all the wrestlers. So they can't exactly take away a push or bug me by not using me. I'm sure they'd understand injuries, since I saw them rewrite a storyline this past week to give a guy a week off for a hurt shoulder. I'm just not really sure if this entire 'we fire you, we pay you. you quit, you pay us' thing is really legal.
i'm fine with every bit of the contract besides this (merchandising, not appearing on any other companies TV shows, intellectual property and copyrights being owned by the company, etc.)

You should check on you ability to work other companies and unless you're getting paid upfront then the pay them needs to be amended.

I've never heard of any sort of contract that requires a worker to pay a company back what he or she would have made had they not quit the company. I'm no lawyer or anything, but I'd suggest you do some internet research to see what you can find. Overall, this seems a little shady.

Do you have to pay them, or pay them back? Because if you get some of the money upfront, then it would make sense that you would have to pay them for the shows that you do not work.

Ask some of the wrestlers in the company.
If you're getting the same deal as they are, surely one of them had it checked out by a lawyer.
