Although NXT is certainly unique and unprecedented as a method of developing wrestlers, I also can understand why it doesn't really resonate with a mainstream audience like most WWE programming, and I don't think its accomplished its mission objective of "getting young talent over" either.
Here is a conversation I had with a casual wrestling fan while watching RAW.
Him: Who's that idiot talking with Batista? Me: David Otunga Him: Who's that? Me: the black guy who calls himself "A list" Him: Oh, that idiot
If they were signing Otunga to either get views from the Access Hollywood crowd or trying to get Otunga over as a heel, it ain't working. He's pretty forgettable IMO, which actually goes for most of the NXT talent.
Michael Tarver: "the other black guy with the T on his chest who sucks"
That Dude with the troll hair who hangs out with CM Punk (ugh...can't even remember his name!)
Wade Barrett (mainly memorable because he hangs out with Jericho and looks semi-competent most of the time)
Skip Sheffield: "the dumb guy from Texas who sucks at carrying things and loses alot"
Daniel Bryan: "that dude the announcers tell us is supposed to be cool but seems stuck in a Revenge of the Nerds gimmick"
David Otunga: "the other other black guy who talks alot about Hollywood but is boring"
Heath Slater: (actually somewhat memorable because he is allowed to look halfway decent as a wrestler, and seems to have decent chemistry with Christian)
Justin Gabriel: the only breakout star from the series IMO, seems to get good crowd reaction, which is rare for NXT guys.
So out of 8 guys, that leaves only 1 breakout star (who isn't the breakout WWE desperately wanted) and a couple of guys who look like they could be useful midcarders (Barrett, Slater), and 1 who is talented but doomed to comedy jobberdom because of his NXT portrayal (Bryan). Pretty low success rate for the "future of WWE" IMO.

As of now, WWE thinks it's the Bryan/Otunga show. When the season ends and they get called up (and I have my fingers crossed they all will eventually), it'll be a lot clearer who's destined to break out.

Are we too forgiving to NXT? I don't think so. Are you far too hard on NXT? I think so.
It's actually the first mainstream product from the wrestling business that I find refreshing. I don't even look into it as deep as you do. They aren't just building new talent, they're actually building characters, and when NXT is over, and those dudes are on either RAW or Smackdown, I will not only know who they are, but what they're about, on almost an exhausted level.
That's not something I can say for a lot of new talent in WWE. These guys are getting a build that not many other people have the opportunity to get. Just think if Kofi Kingston had this much time to establish his character beyond "Stereotypical Jamaican Wrestler". He made a little headway in his feud with Orton, but I think these guys have already done more in the few short weeks that NXT has been around.

I don't know why some are surprised that Justin Angel is the breakout star from this...he has all of the flashy moves plus a good look so the casual fan will eat it up...
But this show has given viewers a reason to care about the rookies since we know their characters very well instead of some goofy video packages/debut outta no where like we usually get...
I mean it's even allowed a heel turn to happen already..

Aren't they doing exactly what everyone has wanted the WWE to do for years? They're bringing in a fresh group of guys and giving them enough time to shine so people will get to know and care about them. It's a pretty good way to let the new guys sink or swim.

I don't know about you, but I know who each of the rookies are and what they're about, and there isn't one of them that I don't want to see go on. After his segment on Smackdown, Darren Young might be climbing up my personal rankings.

I think its a refreshing and innovative idea. Although I would have preferred it if they had made it a knockout tournament and stretched it over the season. Imagine the storylines you could have written.
The winner of the season would get a title shot of their choice.
Daniel Bryan faces Michael Tarver in the first round. Miz costs Bryan the match by bumping the ref during Cattle Mutilation, and Bryan gets pinned after a chair shot from Tarver.
Wade Barrett smashes through his first 2 opponents. (I believe this guy is going to be HUGE, he has the look, the mic skills and the presence) Gets to the final, but got injured in the semi final, and therefore cannot compete. An alternate is named for the final against Michael Tarver, fresh off a dirty win over Heath Slater in which one of his gloves was padded with an illegal substance inside.
It's Daniel Bryan. And the final is in a steel cage.
Bryan wins, and sets his sights on the Miz. After Bryan beats Miz, you have Barrett chasing the US title, and the NXT championship that he never lost.

I think NXT would be a lot better if it was at least 85-90% NXT content and not some times like 30min or more of packages. If they want to do NXT they should actually commit to doing it. The booking doesn't make sense to me either but I'll continue to watch because I like the show when they find time to do it between clip segments.

Well it looks bad for the future of the show since by October it will be left without a station as it looks, there is a rumor that it might come to Bravo but I don't if that would work looking at Bravo's demographics.

They get better ratings that Impact and it's cheaper to produce for both the company and the TV channel doesn't have to help the company pay for talent.

I was 100% with it for the first five weeks. Wade Barrett and Heath Slater were made to look especially awesome, and Bryan Danielson's jobbing streak still made sense. Week 6 or 7, however, and some doubts started to creep in. Now, it's just tedious to watch, because we all know what will happen.

I totally agree and if it comes to having to cut one show either Superstars or NXT I'd pick NXT. I just feel it has potential and started good but they are making it too much like typical WWE programming and need to make it simple and not so convoluted than it could be good. But honestly I don't see this happening and I doubt NXT will last much longer.

But I wonder what long-term prospects were really there to begin with, especially if they have eight new rookies with every season. There are only so many people in developmental, and there's also only so much room on the main roster.
