When I was just 3 and a half years old around Summer Slam '88 my mom sat me down in front of the tv, turned it on and let me watch wrestling. She herself wasn't a fan or anything but my 3 year old brain was fixated and she saw no harm in me watching it.
A few years later as I was getting older and had at this point become obsessed with wrestling I started having backyard matches with my best friend. He only ever watched wrestling with me and even that was rare so I wrote our promos and showed him the moves that different wrestlers would do. I would taked the top section off a pizza box and make the main part of a championship then run one of my belts through it. We would then be our favorite wrestlers. He always wanted to be Kerry Von Erich and so I would mix it up with people for the Texas Tornado to feud. I was using my different favorites, The Rockers, Animal, British Bulldog, Randy Savage, The Undertaker, The Ultimate Warrior, Jake Roberts and so on.
One person I never could quite understand the appeal of was Hulk Hogan. I always thought he was really annoying as a kid and never liked that I was supossed to "love" him. To this day I still don't see what was so great about him. Looking back at his old promos and matches recently just confirms he was terrible. Remember when Liz got knocked off the ring apron during the tag match at SNME? Look at Hogan's terrible acting job. "Oh God! Please breathe!" "I swear Randy didn't mean it."
Was I suppessed to think Liz was dead? Most of the time when a person isn't breathing in the mind of a child they are dead.
On the self destruction of the ultimate warrior dvd hogan whines about how warrior mentioned that he beat him years before and said it's a rule in the business you don't talk about the past. He said in that moment warrior ruined the whole storyline because now people knew that the warrior had beat hogan before. Really? I'm suppossed to what, have forgoten about that match? That didn't ruin the storyline. The storyline was going to fail from the start because it included a self absorbed talentless hack. The other guy was the warrior. Then you have Nash laying down for Hogan and hogan winning the titlle. All is well and good right? Now Jarrett lays down at the PPV and suddenly that's the reason WCW was going down the drain? Oh really hogan? ok for you to do it but no one else? Hogan talks about how ridiculous the warrior interviews were but look at old hogan promos. they aren't much different and neither are savage's.
I once booked the greatest match in the history of wrestling as a kid. Hogan vs Hogan
one of my favorite childhood promos I wrote for hogan when I was a kid went something like "only hulk hogan can beat hulk hogan brother. and i don't even know if hulk hogan can beat hulk hogan brother. because when hulk hogan has the hulkamainiacs hulk hogan is unstopable. but when when hulk hogan has the hulkamainiacs there's is no man hulk hogan can't beat. so hulk hogan whatcha gonna do when hulkamania and the largest arms in the the world run wild on you?"
the match up never happened.
