I'm sorry but if I asked somebody who their favorite "old school" wrestler is and they said "The Rock" I'd probably make fun of them for calling him "old school"
But about breaking kayfabe. I never even told my best friends about it while I was wrestling.

I love screwing around with marks and going on full heel-commentator mode when discussing wrestling with them. ;D

I only did it once. And only out of fatigue and boredom.
My cousin insists everytime Orton loses a match he's getting screwed. In fact, it seems that way with almost any heel out there. He likes the Miz and everything. But in this particular case, Orton had just lost to Cena in the Iron Man match, and he insisted that John Cena had screwed Randy Orton and that Orton really would take the loss personal and that Cena is ruining wrestling.
After about 15 minutes or so of it, I finally blurted out "You know it's all fake right? Orton and Cena probably are getting drinks after the show and hanging out. Orton has no problem with losing the match, he gets paid to entertain, not to win. I somehow doubt he's going to go around backstage telling others he got hosed in the Cena match by letting him go over."
Then my cousin told me, "way to go, way to ruin the illusion."
I didn't get it.
But outside of that experience, I make it a point for those who watch to get emotionally invested into the storylines and matches. No use in being a jaded fan and pointing out how 'X' wrestler has bad workrate and this Japanese guy you've never heard of is a better worker.

I play mark with kids if they still think it's real and speak to them as it's real, however I always side with the heels so that they can have the fun of telling me I'm wrong.

Firstly, if it's someone under the age of 16 or so, I would never break kayfabe, and even play into the fact that what they're seeing may be real. Absolutely. The day my 11-year-old sister finds out it ain't real, it'll break my heart. Looking back on it, I'm upset that my dad decided to, just in passing, tell his 8-year-old son who was a new wrestling fan, that it wasn't real. I don't really want to do that to someone else.

As I was raised 'smart' (if you can call it that) with both my older brothers being in with tape traders and guys in the business, it's a difficult line sometimes, because I've always talked about wrestling more or less as we do here on the forum, but if someone genuinely likes wrestling and isn't informed about the behind the scenes goings on, I would never try and ruin it for them because it allows that extra suspense of disbelief which can add so, so much.
The people I will correct are those my one Brother dubs 'Half-Smarks' who try and act informed but end up coming off as less informed than a total, day one 'mark'. The sort who will always refer to Shawn Michaels as Michael Hickenbotton, Undertaker as Mark Calloway etc, but then will say Kane and Taker are real life brothers or some such similar, as they, nine times out of ten, are the ones who will try and actively wreck things for other fans.

If some guy at a live event tells me that I'm hurting his kid's feelings or something stupid like that because I'm cheering against who they're cheering, I'll tell him to f*** off and I cheer who I want.
But that's pretty much it. I could care less if someone I don't know thinks it's real or not.

I have never met anyone who believed wrestling was completely legit. However, I told a friend of mine that I used to watch wrestling. She only liked the Rock and asked me what happened to him so I pretty much went into the whole story (or what's been told of it). She then asked me more about what I liked about wrestling. I thought I was boring the ish out of her and I kept asking her if she wanted me to stop but she said "Hey, if I wasn't interested I wouldn't have brought it up."
Personally, I don't understand how anyone could see wrestling as completely real. I figured it out at around the age of 5 that something had to me up otherwise a lot of the wrestlers would be in jail, dead, or in the hospital.

I mean adults, people you see out in the real world who believe what the TV tells them? In the UK this person does not exist. We're a cynical bunch as a nation.

Up until I'd say the late 80's, stuff like that WAS going on. Jim Cornette talks about in one of his shoots about how fans would damage their vehicles or try to injure or even kill him and the MX.

They come to the shows I commentate at, and ohhhh they exist. They just manage to mix it with a special blend of chav-like obnoxiousness, so you don't notice it straight away

I totally ruin it if I get the chance. You're a real winner. No I don't I actually let people enjoy the show they want to watch and the people they want to see. If I met a grown adult? I would definitely let them know its fake. Why? Because they must be an obvious idiot to think its real. Come on, man. If you meet a twenty year old adult who thinks its real and dont point out to them the obvious truth, I would say there is something wrong with YOU, not them. My dad let me know it was fake when I was a kid, and I wouldn't call him a bitter smark for that. I guess the majority of this board would though. Guess I should hate my dad.

It's not the telling that is the problem here, it's the manner in which Schattenjager implies he would do it, i.e revel in making fun of a person's misconception with the hope of wrecking their enjoyment.
There is a difference between that and letting someone in danger of looking a bit daft down gently.

There is a difference between that and letting someone in danger of looking a bit daft down gently. Yeah, I can see that point. Although in fairness to him, if you met a 30 year old that still believed in Santa Claus, you KNOW you would think they were an idiot. As someone who figured it out as a kid [my dad just confirmed my suspicions] I cant see someone three times my age at the time still thinking it was real. Especially since I figured this out in the 80s when the business was still somewhat protected.

No, I mean like during the matches. Whenever I'd see someone like Bret Hart doing the Sharpshooter, I'd wonder how his opponent doesn't end up with a broken back or worse. When Goldberg got arrested and then reappeared the next week I figured that it was just a storyline. I thought Austin walking out was a storyline too and it wasn't until I started posting at forums like this one that I found out that it was legit. My older brother felt (and still feels) the same way. For example, he still believes that the wrestlers don't really bleed. He thinks they use blood packets or capsules to make the blood. I almost told him about blading but I figured he wouldn't care anyways.

I've had people ruin it for me.
I'm not a mark, but I do like to suspend disbelief while watching. I have some friends who tend to point out insider stuff in the middle of a match eg "that was good selling" or "that spot was botched" and I do my best to ignore it.
So, Metylerca, I know how your cousin feels.
