To be honest I am very...very surprised that JR hasn't left the WWE before now. It seems over the years he has been the subject of ridicule in WWE/F Storylines. He's been fired on more than one occasion, kicked in the groin by Linda McMahon, forced to kiss Vince's doughy white ass(in his own hometown no less) beaten to an oblivion by many superstars, had his colon surgery be made a mockery of, and recently was used as a catalyst in a segment with Santina where he said he has a crush on JR.
It wouldn't surprise me if Good Ol JR decided not to come back..

Why he stayed around as long as he did is a mystery to me. He is/was well-respected by the majority of his peers, except Old Man Vinny. I dont know why he loves messing with JR all the time, he is by far the best commentator his company has ever had.

I'm confused by this thread. Did JR announce he was leaving?

I'm confused by this thread. Did JR announce he was leaving? Not in so many words...he hinted at it on his Twitter (I think it was Twitter). If he leaves I won't be surprised. Go somewhere that will respect him and what he's done for the business. WWE obviously doesn't appreciate him....well Vince & the people in charge....I feel the wrestlers and his level peers (other commentators) do respect him.

A previous Twitter post said something about studying MMA stuff, so he may be leaving wrestling altogether...

One word: Money That's why JR stayed around as long as he did. This. JR has made it very clear that "putting food on the table" is the most important thing to him. I'm confused by this thread. Did JR announce he was leaving? Today is the last day of his contract, and according to posts he made on his website yesterday (29th) he has yet to sign a new deal. And a few comments he's made this week have implied he's more then likely leaving WWE, and unless TNA makes him a hell of an offer, will likely be leaving the wrestling business. He keeps mentioning projects outside of wrestling he's got on the go without going into specifics

Leave... stay... it's hard to care anymore. Every week he posts a message about how nothing is certain and he'll know more next week, bla bla bla.

TNA might make a play for his services they could use a backstage guy like JR who could further order that company as well as have him announce. All in all I don't think that the WWE will not know what they had in JR till he is gone either to MMA, TNA, or just anywhere even retirement.
The guy was a great announcer and by all accounts a solid backstage mind. The fact that the guy isn't getting respected is really sad.

He said in his blog today that he wasn't leaving WWE right away even though his contract ends tomorrow. He is staying on for some time doing the administrative work that he has done since his days as VP of Talent Relations and is still working with WWE on a new contract.
He'd also have the 90 no compete that Tazz and Coach had as well I'd imagine.

Ross stuck around because he loves wrestling, and the worst of the abuse of him didn't happen until there was no viable competitor out there.

Ross always had problems with his employers for some reason. it happened in WCW, too.

Is it bad that whenever I think of Jim Ross now I think of "Angry Jim Ross". I wonder since he'll have time off if he'll go on a search for Dark Journey?

"I'd slap you across the face but it looks like God beat me to it..." I know J.R. knows its a work and that's his job but surely he must feel that was pretty low. Did get Tazz some nuclear heat though.

I don't recall his bell's palsy mocked really, aside from the Taz line... aside from the Oklahoma character in WCW.

On the other hand, if they didn't like him so much, why did they keep him around, and why is he in the HOF (we all know how much your standing with the company matters with that)? I have a feeling that they thought they were just trying to use him as a sympathetic babyface, but who knows?
Ross stuck around because he loves wrestling, and the worst of the abuse of him didn't happen until there was no viable competitor out there.
The latter describes WWF/E in a nutshell (as I commented elsewhere, the public attacks for backstage "offenses" and even for just being a name in another company got REALLY bad by then, IMO. And you can put a lot of other verbs after "the worst")

This. JR has made it very clear that "putting food on the table" is the most important thing to him. And we all know he needs A LOT of food on his table. (rimshot) No really, he should do what he likes best. But last Wrestlemania, without JR, felt kind of strange.
