Who do you believe should have been WWF/WWE champ but never was?
Its a damn tragedy Jake the snake,Mr.Perfect,Rick Rude, and the Million Dollar Man,British Bulldog,Owen Hart and Razor Ramon were never made WWF champ.

I would also like to add Arn Anderson to that list. With 2 world titles in play now and the fact that WWE has to produce so many hours of TV and PPV every month, just about everyone gets to hold the title now, but in those days, it meant something. Guys like Sheamus and Jack Swagger would not have been allowed to touch the title. (And I like both guys; they just were not/are not ready for the title when they got it. Maybe in the future, but not now.)

Flair is the exception because he was the single biggest star out of NWA/WCW in years...bigger even than Steamboat, who clearly wasn't going to get anywhere near the WWF strap. Of all the classic 80s heels who didn't get the strap, I'm probably saddest about Hennig (he's Mr. Perfect, and what's more perfect than being the top champion?), but DiBiase Sr., Rude, and Piper were certainly all deserving and could have all done a great job as the top man.

I would have liked to have seen Paul Orndoff hold the belt several months after WM1, mainly to spare us the WM2 main event of Hogan/Bundy. A Hogan/Orndorf match for the title with Orndoff defending in the big blue cage would have been so much better.

To add to the list that is already here Ricky Steamboat Tatanka Road Warrior Animal Marty Jannety Big Bossman (heel) Lex Luger Kerry Von Erich The Mountie Ricky Steamboat-I agree somewhat but for some reason Vince hated him. Tatanka- IC champ at best. Road Warrior Animal=Nah. He was way too much a Tag Team Wrestler. Marty Jannety-Please tell me you are joking? Big Bossman (heel)-If you mean the 98 to 2000 era. Nah he was fine as a hardcore champ type of guy. Lex Luger-He WOULD HAVE been champ but he got drunk and screwed himself over breaking kayfabe. Kerry Von Erich- Texas Tornado was fine as IC champ. The Mountie-Nah. Top Mid card guy at best.

As the self proclaimed biggest Piper mark on this board, I will perform the act. I won't enjoy it, but I think we'll all agree it has to be done. Lessons must be learned

I agree regarding the current multiple "world" titles situation. They give a world title to guys who have no business getting that recognition. Can you imagine Sheamus, Jack Swagger, or even Rey Mysterio(and I love Rey) being NWA World Heavyweight title holders alongside Harley Race, Terry Funk, Jack Brisco, etc?
It used to be that holding the world title meant you were responsible for "carrying" the company. You worked harder than anyone else and were more accountable for drawing large crowds than anyone else. Further, you had to put on top-notch matches every night, often 60 minute matches, and make the hometown hero look good despite not winning the title.
The philosophy of the world title has obviously changed dramatically. The WWF/E people i see being capable of filling the old world champ role would be: Ted DiBiase, Sr., Jake the Snake Roberts, Razor Ramon. In contrast, I think the following would never have been able to fill that role(but held a WWF/E world title): Ultimate Warrior, Psycho Sid, Mankind(I love Mick, too, but I agree with Flair-glorified stuntman) Brock Lesnar.
I'm torn on the following: Goldberg, JBL, Big Show

On those 3 I'd say Goldberg- Definately yes, I never really liked him that much, but the dude was over like nobody's business and WCW was CRAVING new Main Eventers at that stage. They just screwed up with him subsequently.
JBL- A no turning into a yes as his reign went on. It maybe came a bit too fast after the gimmick change, but he turned into a world class heel.
Big Show- Not after 97-98 when his laziness and bad habits took over.

A few for me.
Ted DiBiase Rowdy Roddy Piper
and to me it's a crying shame that Jake the Snake never had a chance to be the champ. I know this was brought up in another thread but he would have been an incredible heel champ when he was at the top of his game.

I know that I'll get flack on this one. But I really wanted Billy Gunn to break out back when the title always seemed to be on Austin, Rock or Foley

The Mountie-Nah. Top Mid card guy at best. Tatanka had the longest win streak in wwe history. Plus they could have sold replica headresses and foam tomahawks Animal is a personal preference Bossman from the '80s feuding with Hogan. He was being booked as a very brute wrestler and could het heat Marty: Why would I be joking? He had as much and a lot of people feel more skill that shawn. It was his demons that brought him down. Lex Luger: that rumor has been debunked countless times including by Bret Hart who stated the plan was always for Bret to win the title. Kerry Von Erich had the look and talent. Had he not killed himself and been a drug addict he could have been even better. The mountie had good feuds with guys like Piper and Bret. People were interested in them at the IC level I think they would have been at the world level too. He was a good in ring worker and was better on the mic than bret.

King Kong Bundy or Big John Stuff could've had short runs as champions

Owen Hart. A sentimental choice, of course, and one a lot of people may not have agreed with had it not been for the tragedy in Kansas City. However, I think he could have- and should have- gotten a huge babyface push after Montreal, and taken the title from Shawn. Of course Steve Austin was clearly the top face and deserved it more, but a Owen run would not have been out of place. And of course a brief heel run during his run with Bret would have been great, too.
