I'd like to comment, but I don't want to get banned. Great job Swiss, way to take up for child molesters. Isn't the US partly at fault too though? I don't exactly understand all the legal ins and outs, but from my reading of the article it seems the Swiss just wanted to look at the original file on the case to review it and then they would release Polanski to the US, but for some reason the US refused. Switzerland has long remained neutral in most foreign affairs, and to my knowledge, does not currently have an extradition treaty with the United States unless the crimes are violent in nature. I'm not defending Polanski or anything (in fact, I'm going to remain quite neutral on my opinion, lest I skirt the rules here), but this is consistent with Switzerland's foreign policy for many, many years.

I don't really know much about the whole thing but wasn't it rape in the "statutory" way. As in, the sex was consensual, even though she was underage. I'm not saying that makes it ok.
I think Polanski should be brought to justice but something about this whole extradition deal seemed a little bit suspect to me.

There were definitely drugs involved, so she may not have been of competent mind at the time.

Good on Switzerland, not only did the plaintiff (I did in the first edit say defendant, just to explain later posts) want the trial to be dropped but they did the legal thing in refusing extradition due to lack of evidence. Honestly, it shouldn't matter what she thinks. The message being sent here is that being famous means you can get away with something truly terrible.

I don't know what's more pathetic: the fact he allegedly raped a 13-year-old or the fact it took 4 decades worth of crap to arrest him, only for him to walk. To me, I think it's one of the most ridiculous court cases ever, and at this rate, Roman should be given an apology for ruining his career over nothing in the longest run.

Given an apology? The court case wouldn't have dragged on nearly as long if he hadn't fled the continent for 28 years. Any damage to his career is a direct result of choices that he made. Anyone wanting to avoid what he has gone through has the option to simply not drug and rape minors.
As far as Swiss demands for evidence before extraditing him, what a load of crap. The evidence is that he was convicted of a sexual crime against a minor. Not accused, but convicted. What more evidence is necessary? Perhaps the fact that his conviction was a result of him pleading guilty?
Convicted. After pleading guilty. Of a sexual crime. Against a minor.
There's your proof, Switzerland. But thanks for at least pretending to care, unlike France.

Made several famous movies, including "The Pianist" amongst others. He was pretty much outlawed from the US after the "rape", so you don't hear too much positive news on him.

They needed this to be able to firstly keep the neutrality of the nation which is vital, not only for the country itself but for the general infrastructure of economic and political internationally, and also to be in line with international laws. The Swiss did the right thing and a man who was lied to by the courts is now free.

It was not statutory, Polanski forced himself on her.

Quite a lot actually, there's the everlasting culture in early teens to be adult so thus the idea of cigarettes and drink and sex is almost alurring to teens

So you are just going to ignore the actual quote from the victim stating she did not want to have sex so Polanski drugged her and made her? It was not consensual in any sense of the word.
