Yea so I just finished watching a movie on netflix, The Beguiled. It sounded great. Clint Eastwood, Civil War, Girls school. I mean what more can you want in a movie....
That movie was not what I expected to watch. It was a boring drama, with no blood and heavy on the dialog. That ends with the chicks poisoning him with mushrooms.
How can you go wrong with Clint, War and Girls School?

Begins and ends with District 9 for me. When I first saw the trailers for this movie I was pumped for some kind of science fiction movie, something like Aliens is what I was thinking it'd be like. Instead (and this is all in my opinion of course) {Spoiler}I got a dreadfully boring movie, with an unlikeable lead who is a d***, gets himself in trouble and I am then supposed to feel sorry for him. The aliens were really cool looking, but the movie was nothing what I expected.

Yeah, totally. I wasted two hours of my life watching The Bridges of Madison County, and that p**** Clint Eastwood didn't blow up a single bridge. f***in' Clint Eastwood.

This is only tenuously related to the thread, but I would like to make everyone aware, in case they were not already, that AMC is doing a Clint Eastwood marathon tomorrow, er, today (Saturday), and it looks to include the type of Eastwood fare which we all know and love (Unforgiven, etc).

M. Night's "The Village"
Part of the blame is placed on the trailers, but I was really looking forward to a period piece that had villagers deal with unseen monsters that were invading their town.
What I really got was... well... lame.

I thought Fight Club was just gonna be 2 hours of a bunch of meatheads fighting each other for no reason. Especially since the recommendation came from a friend who is into that sort of thing. Then he got pissed off when I figured it out after I saw that first flash of Brad Pitt early in the film.

Step Brothers was shockingly good I thought it was just going to suck because it looked stupid. BUT it was delightfully stupid and didn't take its self seriously at all.

Big Fan-I thought it was going to be a broad comedy. Had no idea it would turn into a depressing, Taxi Driver type of film.
Alexander-Me and everyone I knew were looking forward to this Oliver Stone flick. We had no idea it was going to be a incoherent, disappointment. We thought it was going to be good.
High Plains Drifter-Wont ruin the film by talking about it here. But it was not what I expected.
The Road-The stupid trailers made it look like an action/adventure. This film is anything but that. After seeing it I was depressed for two weeks. I haven't been depressed since high school.
The Phantom Menace-No explanation needed.

For good: Baby Mama. I thought it would just be a stupid, average SNL-type comedy. Instead, it was very smart and funny and very rewatchable.
For bad: Adventureland. Not necessarily the movies fault, as the ad people beat us all over the head with it being the next Superbad. But it's no where close to the same movie. It's not even 1/100th as funny as Superbad. It's like Dazed and Confused (just kind of a story about life rather than a plot) except remove any semblance of humor and replace all the actors with cardboard cutouts.

For good: The New Guy. My friends and I were ripping on the commercials like mad, then someone brought it down so we decided to watch it. It wasn't great, but it was really good. For bad: Avatar. {Spoiler}Visually stunning. But seriously... I felt like everything was either rushed, slowed down or glossed over. I know people would complain had it been two or three movies, but it seriously should've been. 2/3ds of the way in, I was waiting for it to end. The ending was predictable, a lot of the stuff was just cheesy/stupid or done in a manner that made it so. Like the planet runs on some sort of midichlorian internet. Augustine's death was WAY too Cirque du Soleil, imo. It literally had me laughing out loud at how stupid it was, in been jaw drops at how long they were running it (sorry, it just hit that classic comedy moment when something is drawn out so long it's funny ala Peter's knee from Family Guy). It also made the ending far too obvious at that point for Sully. Granted, it was already fairly obvious from the get go, but it was like it was spelled out. Again, visually stunning and not a bad movie. It actually had that "90's feel" of the big blockbusters ala Jurassic Park or Men in Black or whatever. I just do not see near the hype that it got. Nothing in it was truly great, imo, outside of the visuals.

That is almost the same as my experience, except that it was me that got pissed off when I saw the brief appearance of Brad Pitt and paused the DVD player to see what it was. Another Clint Eastwood movie is Million Dollar Baby, I was expecting a normal sports movie and that wasn't what I got.

Inglorious Bastards
I was expecting a "Dirty Dozen"/"Kelly's Heroes" type movie but it was more about the revenge scheme
Still great though

Inglorious Bastards I was expecting a "Dirty Dozen"/"Kelly's Heroes" type movie but it was more about the revenge scheme Still great though That may be the greatest example of trailers completely misleading the audience. Did the French girl appear in a single trailer? But I agree, great movie nevertheless. On the opposite side of that, the trailer for Pineapple Express focused on the wacky action bits, completely leaving out the actually rather good tale of a growing friendship. I still think James Franco deserved all the credit Robert Downey Jr got for Tropic Thunder. Also, the trailer for In Bruges made it seem...like...a movie with Colin Farrell. This was probably forced on it by every other word in the movie being a curse, but the movie itself was about 10,000x better than the trailer would indicate.

Big Fan-I thought it was going to be a broad comedy. Had no idea it would turn into a depressing, Taxi Driver type of film. It was advertised everywhere as a "dark comedy", which I've come to learn really means "Wholly depressing...but kinda funny at times". It was still a good movie but I didn't laugh at it. My pick goes to Hancock. I remember seeing this in theaters and thinking it was two different movies glued together. Seriously, the second half should've been a sequel instead (which I think might've been the original plan but they weren't sure if they would get to do one). If they had stuck with "Will Smith as Drunk Superman" for the entire thing, it would've been great.
