I know there has always been talk of WM 3 really only drawing 78,000 people to the Silverdome. I think it was Meltzer who first brought it to people's attention. I just don't see it. The Silverdome's official capacity is listed at 80,311, and with all those seats on the floor, I can see fitting 93,173 into the building for the event.
I can buy 78,000 being the paid attendence, I know that the WWF comped many people for WM 3. But I do believe they got 93,173 into the building. Knowing what the building holds, and seeing the size of that crowd makes it really hard to doubt.
I guess the center of this controversey is if McMahon claims the gate is from 78,000 or 93,000. I dont know, and it doesnt really matter to me. I just believe there were 93,173 fans in attendence that day, whether they all paid or not doesnt matter, the crowd is as much a spectacle as the matches themselves.
What does everyone else think about this?

They always inflate the attendence of these events to make it seem more special.

Who are you to question Hulk Hogan's attendance claim when we all know that the event drew 500,000 people at the Pontiac Silverdome Roman Colliseum... all there to watch Hulk slam the 900 pound Andre the Giant

I know that inflating attendences is a standard practice. But I havent ever heard or read any disputes of the attendence of events like WM 6, Summerslam 92, or any of the later WM's in huge stadiums. Its always WM 3 you hear about. Thinking about it more, maybe there was less than 93,000 people, but at the same time..there had to be more than 78,000. 78,000 wouldnt have even have filled up the normal seating, let alone the seats on the floor. I guess it will always be one of the great mysteries of wrestling.

I would go with about 85,000 but Andre adds about 8,000 more in the arena, since he's 2 tons.

I heard stories that Vince had many tickets, a few thousand more or less, a few days prior to the event or extra empty seats scattered across the area he got on the radio and basically gave them tickets away for free.

Definitely more than 80,000 (they had that much in the stands alone) but lest then 93,000 because they probably couldn't fit that many on the floor.
I'm guessing 87,000 tops

Remember, free tickets are never free. There's still parking, food, and merchandise.

Football Capicty was 80,368 so 78,000 would be undercapicty. I guess I would put it at around 85-86,000

I have a big ass book on pro football history called total football. It lists the attendance for Super Bowl 16 at the Pontiac Silverdome between the 49rs and Bengals at 81,270. I agree with the original poster, it had to of been way over the 70 thou mark. If you put the ring in the center of the field and filled the rest of the field up with folding chairs, you should be able to get the number up to 82,000.

The real question are millions and millions watching around the world or is that an inflated number too?

Definitely not 93,000, but definitely more than the 78,000 or whatever.
For all the reasons posters before me said already. It holds more than 78k anyway, and the extra ground level seating is good for several thousand more.
Not 93k though...but 85k? Sure, something like that.
