I posted this question on the "Rest of Wrestling" forum, but I thought it would be interesting to get RD's opinion on the topic as well...
Alright, I've read "Death of WCW" and plenty of other articles that paint Vince Russo in a very negative light. His non-sensical storylines, playing up to internet smarks, and general destruction of the legitimacy of various titles are all well-documented.
My question is this...what did he do right He wasn't just a smooth talking con man who managed to get high profile jobs in two of the biggest organizations in pro wrestling at the time, was he? Someone fill me in on some of his successes.

Booking of Survivor Series 98. The matches were awful but having Rock winning the title and siding with Corporation was perfect. No one expected it.

WWE he did at lot of the attitude era during Austin big run on top. As for WCW very little was done. Maybe the push of Booker T maybe the biggest postive. If he can be given credit for that.

he got the Rock to start talking in the third person. Rock always mentions howhelpful Vince Russo was with him.

I'll just look to WCW, but his pushing of the young talent was absolutely critical. Now granted, he had no idea HOW to push that young talent, but he knew it had to be done. For that, you must give the guy credit.

What he did right was take WCW's money and sellout to them. Also what he did right was convincing 92 percent of the world that he screwed hogan.

1. He didn't kill anyone....
That we know of.
2. He finally helped to drive a stake through the heart of that flaming turd known as the WCW.
Even if it wasn't intentional.
3. He put Hogan in his place and poor Terry stormed off with his lunchbox and never came back to the "sandbox."
4. He left TNA and it's better for it.

For that, you must give the guy credit. RD Then again, any 12 year old with internet access could figure that out. He did NOTHING right. Austin vs. McMahon? That was mostly booked by Austin and McMahon. I'm guessing the best parts by Austin and McMahon, then the worst by Russo. Mankind? Mick Foley's ideas. The Rock? All about the Rock's ideas.

The Hogan shoot at Bash at the Beach 2000 has to be my favorite WCW moment ever. I've watched that thousands of times. Then again Booker did lose to Kaynon earlier on the PPV then beat triple J for the title.

The Hogan shoot at Bash at the Beach 2000 quote] This was a work between Hogan and Russo. And alls this did was stroke Hogan's ego even more when ratings went down when he was gone.

that is the common thought but then why did Hogan sue Russo and WCW over what Russo said? Even though it was true. I heard it was a work but Hogan didn't like what Russo said so he sued. Which is more of a reason to hate Hogan.

The only time I even came close to marking for Hogan was when the nWo drove the semi through the ambalance that the Rock was in, in Chicago. But the truck did all the work so it doesn't count. But when the Warrior beat Hogan at WM 6 that was the greatest day of my childhood.

After WCW's demise Russo went to NWA:TNA and formed SEX (Sports Entertainment Xtreme). SEX Angle was turning point in TNA's evolution for being edgy but many of the wrestling fans thought SEX was nWo rip-off and the whole angle was dropped. I think the biggest contribution of Russo was to make AJ Styles look like a potential world champion by turning Styles heel and beating Jarrett for the NWA title. Russo actually has mind for the business but what he did in WCW was stupid and I think he learnt a lesson from it and his TNA stint was far better than I expected. ;D

Love Hogan because without him you would be watching figure skating rather that wrestling.
Love Russo for making so many mistakes, that people can call him the dumbest man in wrestling history. And then Russo looks in his checking account and sees: T[glow=red,2,300]$$$$$$$$$$$[/glow]
