Hey RD, I was reading your Jim Duggan tape induction. it said something about Harely Race being killed in a storyline by Hulk Hogan and him being in the clouds.............
Um could you get more into detail about that angle? Or is it a future inductee?

Harley had a career injury in a no rules match versus Hogan (he landed badly on a table) and Heenan said he was "dead" so Haku became the new King, but weeks (or months) later Harley came back to reclaim the title and made his last match (i think).

After Race's injury, they showed a funny picture of Harley Race's head appearing to be floating in the clouds as though he was dead.

I cant believe the WWE made an ass out of Harley Race the man is a legend, at least they didnt make him an ass like "The common man" Dusty Rhodes.

The best part is, Hogan was said to be very legitimately scared of Harley.

What was weird about that was, during the actual match they did that spot and the match continued eventually (although probably not for much longer). When they showed the replays later on they acted as if that was the end of it.
I DO distinctly remember them showing the graphic in the corner of the screen on either a Superstars or Challenge broadcast and the face announcer (probably Monsoon?) saying "come on, it's not as if he passed away or anything" to Heenan, who was acting all sad.

My buddy Casey and I always take about "Harley in the clouds"...I'll never forget that graphic. I wonder if they'll recycle it when Harely really does pass on? RD

Didn't Race almost die from those injuries? I heard he had some kind of intestinal problem. He looks great now and his wrestling school is going great. He lives in Eldon, MO. Not too far from where I live in Kansas City.

Does anybody remember the Harley-Hogan Texas Death match angle the WWF ran around the horn in the spring of '87? It was the same thing all over the North East US and the Canadian stops.
In Toronto, Hogan got the snot kicked out of him by Harley and the Heenan family, and then came out on the Maple Leaf Gardens ramp with a bandage wrapped around his head ala a Flinstones tooth ache. (This got huge play on "Maple Leaf Wrestling," the T.O.ized version of Superstars which featured an MLG match at the end of each show)
He challenged Race to a Texas Death match for the next show, and eventually beat him after Harley did the top rope headbut into the title.
A couple of the matches (With the exact same spots and finish... kayfabe was dead even then) ended up on a Coliseum Home Video.
Some good stuff.

I remember watching that and wondering how they could have realeased that. For those that don't know they had a MSG & Boston Garden Texas Death Match of Hogan vs Race that were the exact same on the tape shown back to back. That was a horrible tape especially when compared to the first unusual match tape.

Harley had a career injury in a no rules match versus Hogan (he landed badly on a table) and Heenan said he was "dead" so Haku became the new King, but weeks (or months) later Harley came back to reclaim the title and made his last match (i think). Bobby The Brain Heenan staged a coronation for Haku in 1988 after Tama left the WWF, leaving Haku without a partner (The Islanders). Harley Race had a match with Haku in January 1989, in which he jobbed Haku to give the "throne" more credibility (whatever that word means to the WWF). For those curious why a multi-time NWA World champion would willingly job to a mid-card talent on pay-per-view, the following quote might explain it, brought to us directly from Tom Billington ("Pure Dynamite," p.132)... "Eventually, (Harley Race) recovered from his stomach operation and came back to the WWF. But he didn't stay long. They offered him a road agent's job, doing the same thing as Pat Patterson and Chief Jay, which was (a) promotion in a way. But first, he had to wrestle Haku for the title of 'King.' Well, he lost that match, which was no big deal, because he had his new job lined up and waiting for him. Vince told him to go home, take a couple weeks off, and they would be in touch to tell him when to start. "So Harley went home to Kansas City, and waited, and waited, but no phone call came. So he called Vince. 'It's been two weeks, I haven't heard from you.' Vince told him he was sorry but times had changed - in two weeks - and they already had a new agent. So that was that, Harley had finished with the WWF." That quote should remind "Hoagie" if he watched the 1989 Royal Rumble, and "Legacy" is correct about the severity because Race had "been taken ill with some kind of stomach problem. I don't know exactly what the problem was, only that he had to have major surgery and a big chunk of his gut taken out." (Pure Dynamite, pg. 131)

I didn't know he came back.. when did that happen? Maybe I just forgot about it. He came back to the WWF in November '88 and was in the Survivor Series. He then challenged Haku to a match at Royal Rumble '89 where the winner gets the crown. After a surprisingly good match, Haku won and Race went to WCW to become a manager.

The best part is, Hogan was said to be very legitimately scared of Harley. Dude, EVERYONE is legitimately scared of Harley. In Flair's book he talks about how, before Harley was in the WWF, he stormed the locker room when the WWF was in town looking for Hogan. Hogan had his back turned to the door, but the Funk Brothers saw Harley come in and had stunned looks on their faces--they knew something bad was about to happen. Harley slapped Hogan on the chest (I think I'm remembering this right) and Hogan was very nervous. I can't remember the outcome of this. Anyone?

I don't know if Lawler is or not. He always talks about beating Race and how he sued Vince McMahon over the King Harley gimmick.
