Hogan was the name they gave him to sound Irish. They needed an Irish guy at the time, they had Bruno for the Italians and Pedro for the Puerto Rican crowd, and so forth. his name before that was Terry Boulder

Being Irish I really have no idea how giving him the Hogan name would make him any better but then I don't think I'm gullible enough for Vince's liking.

Incidentally, while looking through a book of names (I'm going to be a Daddy in September), my wife laughed out loud when she found the name Hogan, meaning 'young and fair'.

Being Irish I really have no idea how giving him the Hogan name would make him any better but then I don't think I'm gullible enough for Vince's liking. Back in those days, wrestling often played to specific ethnic groups. Especially in the northeast. Like it was mentioned, Bruno was the guy the Italians tended to get behind, Pedro got them Puerto Rican support. I guess someone figured they'd make Hulk's last name "Hogan" and say he was Irish in the hopes of drawing in the Irish fans. Didn't work out, but the name sure stuck didn't it?
