I don't get it. At all. It's kind of a small horse, I mean what am I missing? Am I crazy?

Ive noticed that a lot of people have torn Tony Schiavone apart for his play by play work. I always thought he did a respectable job. Was he Jim Ross? No. But he wasn't Mongo McMichael either. Alot of his critisim comes from his "greatest night in history" catchphrase which to be honest, as lame as it was, the guy was trying his hardest to do his job and put his show over.
So, RD, I am asking your opinion was he really the anti-christ of announcers, or did he somewhat get a bad rap?

I have no idea how the hell Schiavone had his gig for so long. He was friggin' horrible. I just watched him TRY to commentate a match between Ultimo Dragon vs. Jushin Thunder Lyger...and it was just horrible. The man didn't know ANYTHING. And then years later, he still didn't know anything.
Notice the man hasn't had a job since with any high profile wrestling fed?

I am asking your opinion was he really the anti-christ of announcers, or did he somewhat get a bad rap? Here's the thing with Tony - in his early days, he was actually really, really good. In fact, I liked him better back then than I do Jim Ross now, primarily because Ross has become very stale to me. The issue was that Tony, much like say Michael Cole today, had someone constantly telling him what to say. So it wasn't so much that Tony was an idiot, but that Tony was told idiotic things to say. So what does he do? Tell Bischoff to kiss his ass, and therefore lose his job? Of course not. He does what he's told. Tazz, on Get in the Ring, put it this way. He said he (Tazz) would really like to call a match and analyze everything, but that's not what he's told to do. So he makes jokes or whatever. "It's like if you work at Burger King and you tell the boss, 'I want to make chicken sandwiches today' and the boss says 'no, you're making Whoppers' today. You either make the Whoppers or you're going to Wendy's looking for a job." So yes, Tony did look like an idiot a lot of the time. Sometimes it was certainly his fault. Other times, not so much. RD
