Okay so I read everywhere that Finlay is now retired and want wrestle anymore and just be a road agent. Thats fine, dude was old and not really that interesting.
But I think its a waste. Finlay is a legend in the sport, a veteran and Sheamus is one of WWE's most interesting up coming rookies. I think it would have done a TON for Sheamus and WWE for Sheamus and Finlay to have a long feud in which the last match was a career match, Sheamus Vs Finlay, loser leaves WWE. Sheamus could win and claim that he is now the new Finlay.
Right now its a waste, Finlay just leaves and thats it. Sure he does good stuff like train young stars, but in terms of storylines, what was the point of him coming back? If he at least put over Sheamus it would be a point!

He did. Sheamus went over him in a qualifying match for the battle royal which he won later that night to get his shot against Cena.

Sheamus did squash him on the Jesse Ventura-hosted RAW, the night he became #1 contender.

You didn't mention that they are both Irish (unless that is what you meant by being "the new Finlay". There is potential to be had such as in a feud or an appropriately named gimmick match.

I think Finlay would have played a good mentor to Sheamus similar to Harley Race/Vader

Except that Finlay is from Northern Ireland. I really don't think that's an area the WWE wants to get into.

For "passing the torch" to matter, the person passing it has to be at least somewhat of a big name. Finlay never was. Sheamus could go over Finlay 10 times and the audience still wouldn't care.

...and then Shamus should take Finlay's leprechaun Hornswoggle, and his shillelagh and burn them in a barrel. Thus absorbing Finlay's super Irish powers. Which would allow Shamus to call forth Irish legends like the banshee, and St. Patrick to interfere in matches for him.

It's only been a little over ten years since the Troubles ended, and there are still places where a lot of people would be more than happy for them to start up all over again. It's one thing for there to be cooperation in official international sports, it's quite another to run houseshows with the two feuding or uniting in heavily nationalist or unionist areas. (And also not really. They do for rugby, but not for the Olympics or football, which probably represent the three most important international sporting events over here)

Win. ;D Anyhoo, the move for Finlay to step away from in ring was Vince's call as I have read things, not Fit's own, although as a company guy he's probably more than happy just working in the biz. Finlay is a great worker and had a better run in his 50s than anyone would have expected, and I've been a massive fan saw the guy live at the first show I ever attended as a kid in the late 80s, but there was really no torch to pass. Sheamus had the rocket strapped to him, had already beaten Finlay, and a feud between the two to build that match would have just slowed Sheamus down.

And with all due respects to Finlay, why would Sheamus want to become the new Finlay? Finlay in WWE was a former US champion, four years ago. In kayfabe many of the core audience would believe Finlay would be a great yardstick for Sheamus.

1) Sheamus is already a bigger star than Finaly, it wouldn't have mattered.
2) The move off screen was Vinces call.
3) They did wrestle.

I mean in a passing the torch way not random match What torch? Right. I adore Finlay, as do most people who appreciate wrestling in their wrestling programming, but he doesn't have a torch to pass.
