I'm the exact opposite: I can't play an FPS without a keyboard and mouse. I've tried playing them on the 360 and the controls just don't suit me. I like the pinpoint accuracy that comes with a mouse, and the WASD controls for movement are just perfection. This. I respect the heck out of people who can play FPSes well with console controllers, and from an intellectual standpoint I get that it really all comes down to what you become accustomed to, but I still involuntarily recoil in disbelief every time I come across somebody using a controller plugged into their PC to play an FPS. Yeah, I could never see myself doing that. To me at least, it's like having a perfectly good Mercedes in the driveway, but opting instead to go out in the Kia. I love using a controller for sports/racing/action games, but definitely not shooters. It's one of many reasons why I've stuck with PC gaming for so long.

total war seems a bit easier with the time setting. you could always set it to a short campaign and you'll still have around 200 turns to achieve all of your goals. and trust me, 200 turns is PLENTY, especially when you boost your economy in the first couple of turns and take over neighboring villages. That's good to know. I'd probably enjoy shorter campaigns than longer ones. Also, I'd imagine those games come with good tutorials for newcomers, correct? they do but they don't give you any helpful tips. for instance they don't tell you that the best way to boost your economy would be to create farm land or create mines, so if your new you may do something like create a market in your largest city and wonder why your not making that much money off the bat. If you want to get one and try it out, get rome total war since it's really cheap on steam now. or you could get civ III for a dollar more. and if you have any issues you can always message me on steam or something.

It's cheap enough to just say "F*** it" and buy it, but I'll probably hold off since I've got too many games as is, and wouldn't find much time to play/enjoy/learn it. Hell, I got Battlefield 2 the other day and spent all of 30 minutes playing, and haven't touched it since.

Back when I had a good PC, I was fine with Keyboard mouse, but I haven't had one worth a pooh in 5 years, and since then console FPS games have gotten really freaking good. Maybe if I use a different keyboard. I am on my laptop, and I cannot stand the lack of angled keys, it could make a huge difference for me.

Well, I finally got a new computer yesterday, and let's just say that it's much more enjoyable to use than the old four and a half-year-old rig I had (or the laptop I got a couple of years ago... which then fell apart). The PC version of Mass Effect runs perfectly with all the graphical settings turned up to maximum, although I must say I preferred using the 360 controller for playing it... I guess I'll just get used to the keyboard and mouse interface, since my wired 360 controller wasn't recognized for some reason when I tried it. At least aiming is now somewhat more precise.
My Steam username, by the way, is thebrainchop, although I'm not sure how useful this information is to you because I don't play online games on the PC.

I picked up Mass Effect today, $4.99 on Steam. I now have all the boxed retail 360 exclusives I have wanted on my lappy.
Well, I will, if Steam ever picks up, it is dragging ass on the download, 154kbps. Over an hour and I have 5%.

I have a 9500 GT and I'm wondering if I should kick up the graphics to high.

Steam is just too damned busy right now.

You've probably finished downloading by now, but if not, here's a tip when Steam's download speeds are slow (as they usually are during these big sales):
Go to File --> Settings --> Downloads --> Download region. Try changing the download region to something like Canada or the UK. Those servers probably aren't getting hammered as much as ones in the U.S and it should boost your speeds a bit. Helped mine greatly when I was downloading the original L4D the other night.
BTW, from what I see, Mass Effect is about a 10.7 GB download, whereas L4D is slightly less than 5 GB. Mass Effect is huge, but worth it. Loved the game, despite the fact that the different side planets and the bases/mining caves are pretty much identical from one to the other. Got repetitive going from one planet to the other. Other than that minor issue, terrific game all around. Voice acting, combat, visuals, story... standard fare from Bioware -- in other words, top-notch.
And I also ended up getting the original L4D for the hell of it, and I really like it. It's weird going from L4D2 to the original and not having something as simple as melee weapons, and not having as many special infected, but the atmosphere is incredible. L4D2 has quite a few daytime levels, whereas you're always in the dark in the original. Seems like a much more grittier game than the sequel and I really enjoy the campaigns just as much as those in the sequel. The map layouts are great.

I'd avoid high settings with a 9500GT. Wouldn't be enough to keep your FPS over 30 and playable.
BTW, Blaze, I think controllers aren't supported at all for the PC version of Mass Effect, but I don't have the game installed right now so I can't check myself. I know there are programs out there that let you mimic keyboard buttons using a gamepad, so you might wanna try looking into that.

I'm downloading the 'endless trial' of Champions Online now... my friends from City of Heroes all tell me it's garbage, but I want to try it before I concur.

Damn, I figured that since Jade Empire supported the 360 controller right out of the box it would be the same with Mass Effect, but looks like I was wrong there. Oh well, I guess I'll just play with the keyboard and mouse then. I'm probably going to miss the analog controls and controller vibration a little bit, but I'm not going to install any extra programs for possibly getting the controller to work.

I found that going through the game and hammering down on the space bar wasn't that bad. but the vehicle controls in that game are WASD... which is kind of weird/bad.

I liked using the keyboard/mouse for Mass Effect. Then again I never played it originally on the 360, so I wasn't used to a gamepad with it like others might be. Again, one of those times where I love the pinpoint accuracy that comes with using a mouse.
But I agree Thwak, controlling the vehicle was pretty uncomfortable. I've never enjoyed using a keyboard for driving vehicles in any game that I can remember.

Yeah no pad for Mass Effect. But I can play that ok with out (Bioware games I have played on PC a bit since the olden days). I did pick up a game pad today, but Left 4 Dead is being stupid with it. It wont let the left stick look left or right, annoying as hell. And apparently Doom 3 wont use the pad either.

Really? Damn, I figured that since Jade Empire supported the 360 controller right out of the box it would be the same with Mass Effect, but looks like I was wrong there. Well the thing there is that jade empire NEEDS A CONTROLER while mass effect is ok with out it. Now to be fair I have never played the pc version of jade empire, but I have the original xbox version and that game just seemed like it was built around a gamepad.
