I don't get the flack. Is it just that people wanted HBK to win? I thought it was by far Cena's best match ever, although his lack of selling is quite obvious at times.

I don't remember much complaining except fo the usual Cena related gripes ie; the no-selling, his week looking STF finishing the match. Pretty much everyone has it in the **** range.

i think it was the result. not just cena winning, but in an identical fashion to mania 22 one year prior. cena retains via stf.

GREAT match, really underrated.
WM23 is by itself a GREAT Mania that I don't understand why people don't appreciate more. This match, Batista/Taker, and MITB were all incredible. Plus Umaga vs. Lashley was actually pretty good and got a lot of media attention. Add in the ECW originals vs. New Breed, which was also cool, and the whole show was pretty damn good.
Also, no Triple H!

Great WM and i loved that match. It goes without saying that Cena didn't sell, but apart from that, he had a good showing. Underrated match IMO.

A great match from a great Wrestlemania.

The problem everyone had with the show was that like 3 or 4 same matches were shown on free TV within the month, and each one was better than the one at WM.

Is that the match where Michaels refused the hand shake at the end?

Is that the match where Michaels refused the hand shake at the end? I've always wondered about that. The rumour is that it was a shoot on the part of Michaels because he was legit pissed about Cena's selling (or lack thereof) in the match, but it's hard to tell because you could buy his character at the time acting that way.

I remember HBK/Cena & New Breed/Originals on free TV being better, but I don't remember any others. Anyway, I always thought that Taker/Batista should've closed the show because the fans actually cheered when Taker won the Title, instead of closing the show for the 2nd straight year with the face of the WWE being booed out of the arena.

New Breed/Originals the week after completely OWNED their WM match.
And it irked me BIG TIME that HBK didnt win at Mania. I just wanted him to win one more title.
Cena has had 6 top tier title matches at WM, he has lost one. I just think HBK shouldve been given a run as champ, and have Cena chase the belt. Cena is normally pretty good as a chaser.

I had no problem with that match, but the match in London 3 or 4 weeks later completely overshadowed it.

The match was alright, and the reversal sequences were great at the end. The ending sucked though. You kinda knew it was coming. It happened a year prior, so all the shock and excitement that happened with HHH/Cena, weren't there at all. It was just really depressing and annoying. Just an ending that took all the life out of the crowd.
The whole show was alright though, but it came after (IMO) the best WM of the 20s in WM 22...

I was actually there that night (fantastic WM imo). Anyway, the crowd was anti-Cena the entire night, booing him whenever he showed up on screen. That is, until the main event, when I heard a very high-pitched pop. In my section (not sure if it's on the DVD), there was a back and forth "Let's go Cena!" "Let's go Michaels!" chant duel taking place. Personally, I was pissed that Michaels lost, because as others have said, I feel he should've gotten one more title run. You could argue that winning the WHC at Survivor Series 2002 was that, but personally, I don't think so.
Also, if I remember correctly, I remember there was a guy who attempted to streak right before the match began. And I remember when they were dragging the guy out, you could see HBK mouth something of "Let's go. I've gotta job to Cena." or something to that effect. Could be wrong though.

That whole leg sequence is complete padding. It doesn't go anywhere and the moment HBK stops attacking his leg, Cena is magically healed making the entire thing a waste of time.
Cut out that part and the match would run a lot smoother.

It's been a while since I've seen the match, but I do remember being upset with Cena's poor selling in the match. It wasn't surprising that Cena won, but I wanted HBK to have one last title run.
I really enjoyed Michaels not shaking Cena's hand at the end, whether it was a work or a shoot. I was POed with Cena and didn't want to see them shake hands.

It was the bad selling on Cena's part what I hated. Cena just no told the story of the match. It's wrestling 1.1 when it comes to that. Hell the freaking Undertaker during his "unselling" zombie days sold that stuff. When Bret Hart working in his knee at teh 96 rumble. Taker stumbled around the rest of the match. When Giant Gonzales attack him at the 93 Rumble. Taker sold the leg attack on the ring post. At WM again Taker sold the ethar attack by stagering back to the ring. That is a "zombie" character doing that.
Cena couldn't freaking sell his knee being working on by a freaking legend. That what got me about this match. Cena failing to do something that is taught in basic wrestling. Every wrestler was taught. Cena basicly worked the match as if it was his first match ever. HBK had the right to be pissed because Cena made him look bad for no selling him. As good of the match may been. It was the no sellin in it that over shadowed it.
