you know who I blame for the no selling?
Jim Ross
All it takes is Good Old JR saying "The adrenaline is pumping through Cena now. Helping him fight through that pain in his leg."
I also didn't really understand HBK working over the leg anyway. He doesn't use a leg submission for his finisher. If anything, Shawn works over Cena's leg then he can't stand and Shawn can't ever do his finishing sequence for Sweet Chin Music. Work the head or neck.

And I remember when they were dragging the guy out, you could see HBK mouth something of "Let's go. I've gotta job to Cena." or something to that effect. Could be wrong though. Can anyone confirm this...don't have the dvd and online video quality is terrible. ;D

I was there live and was pretty pissed at the result. The match was pretty sweet, I thought, but I actually walked out as soon as HBK tapped. After 20 years of being a wrestling fan, and finally seeing my all-time favorite wrestler wrestle a match (I might have seen him as a Rocker, I don't really remember), in the main event of Wrestlemania no less, he loses via submission to John Freakin' Cena. I was LIVID!
The match was badass, though, from what I remember, and I was just pumped that my favorite wrestler was in the main event the first time I ever got to see him live. I was on the edge of my seat the whole match, as I thought HBK would finally get one last good run with the title and I would witness the start of it.

It's a really good match, it's just it gets overshadowed by their London match a month or so later.

Exactly what I was going to say, it's still very good.
But the London match, and then the four-way involving both Cena and HBK later in the year (was it also with Edge and Orton?) both trumped it.

Wouldn't working the leg make it harder for Cena to execute the F-U to Shawn? I think that was the purpose of it, but I'm just speculating.

This match also contained a sick piledriver on the steel steps, which legitimately cut open the top of Cena's head. There probably aren't too many people on the roster willing to take that bump, so I gotta give Cena some respect on that.

I was there as well, and I thought the match was pretty good. Other than the no-selling that others have mentioned, I thought the match got off to a really slow start. The first 1/3 of the match seemed to go in slow motion for me.

Taker/Batista was better.

Taker vs Batista is the all time most overrated WM match in my opinion. HBK vs Cena was about 10 times better and just plain well worked. HBK and Cena stole the show followed by Money in the Bank....then Taker vs Batista. Though London Raw, 4 Way at Backlash and Raw 09 match were all better in my books....and tht is saying something about these two men!

I've always wondered about that. The rumour is that it was a shoot on the part of Michaels because he was legit pissed about Cena's selling (or lack thereof) in the match, but it's hard to tell because you could buy his character at the time acting that way. They acknowledged it in a promo about HBK being tired of shaking a wrestler's hand that he knows he can beat and didn't. It was something along those lines, so I doubt it was a shoot.

Just went back and watched my original DVR'ing of the live broadcast, HBK does clearly say "Let's go, I got a job to do to Cena", as the camera is right in his face while he's sitting on the top rope before the match. Wow.

I was at the show as well and I'll rate Taker/Batista over Cena/HBK any time. My problem with it was that the match tried to "Build" by doing the exact same sequence early on - three times, IIRC. It built ok from there, but it wasn't what I expected from these two. No Cena hate here - both are capable of a better match than this, and they proved that in London. and yeah, HBK wasn't too happy either so I don't blame him for not shaking Cena's hand.

I always thought it was an excellent match - and it had one of the all time great wrestlemania entrances preceding it when Cena entered in the sports car. I thought the sequence towards the end with reversal after reversal was very slick - and I just liked the match.
Have to admit I wanted HBK to win but then that was only because I thought he deserved one last run with the belt. Sadly that was not to be.

London match was better. It even had the finish the Cena haters can appreciate, though really, any issue he had in the Mania match was made up for there, with the idea of him going right for the STF for the first five minutes or so of the match since he had beaten Michaels with it before and showing that he was no longer intimidated by HBK.
It goes without saying that Cena is no Bret Hart or Ric Flair, but he told a great story in that match and Micheals, of course, was right with him, adding his own touches. I really loved Cena shouting at the ref, "He won't stay down!" at points. He may have issues selling, but he sold Michaels as the never say die contender and legend in the ring. It's Cena's best match and one of Micheals really good ones as well.
