They have rushed it a bit too much and wasted too much time on challenges (though they have been better this season). If I had been involved, I would have booked it much different in order to allow the fans to get into the workers better.
Week 1 - Season 1
The first week is a trial period where not only the eventual rookies but also other potential rookies that reappear in the following seasons. This is filmed away from the FCW arena instead of at the TV taping. Candidates for Season 1 would have been Alex Riley, Lucky Cannon, Eli Cottonwood, Brett DiBiase, the actual S1 rookies, and a few indie guys that they just have as jobbers in even this role. The potential rookies are introduced to the pros for the season. The rookies are given a series of tasks to do (since they love challenges so much). These challenges have less to do with how they do in the challenges, but rather the way that they do them. There will be some interaction between the rookies, but the idea is to get an insight into what the pros are looking for and who is meeting those expectations.
W2 - S1
Most of the local jobbers are not invited back to the FCW arena, so most of the potential rookies that got invited are the "name ones" that will eventually be on the show. This show will feature a mass interview for the rookies in front of the panel of pros. This will allow the rookies to display some personality without it being live (and allow for reshoots in order to get it perfect).
W3 - S1
The rookies from the last week return to participate in actual wrestling in the FCW arena (taped before FCW, so there will actually be a crowd for once). Win your tag team match and you move on. Lose, and you have to wait a couple of weeks to find out what your fate is. It should have been done this way in order to allow the rookies that take part in the competition to come in with some wins that the crowd at home watched.
W4 - S1
Last week's winners get singles matches.
W5 - S1
Each pro selects a tag team of rookies that they would like to see more of, whether they had lost before or not.
W6 -S1
This is selection week, where the potential rookies (including all of those who were on W2) have a last chance to impress the pros. They take part in a couple of elimination matches. At the end of the episode, the rookies have to stand around while they wait on the pros to select their choice of rookie (order of selection is based on a drew)
1- Miz selects Danielson, who was one of the ones who won every match. Like before, Danielson is not amused.
2- Jericho selects Barrett, who had also won all of his matches. Barrett is pleased.
3- Matt Hardy selects Gabriel, who had lost in the first tag match
(his partner was DiBiase, who refused to participate because he thought that he could buy his way in). He came back well enough, however, so Matt liked his never-say-die attitude.
4- R-Truth selects Otunga, who benefited by being teamed with Danielson twice and Barrett once (getting wins that he did not have to wrestle much for).
5- Christian selects Heath Slater, who along with Danielson and Barrett had been one of the 3 to win all of his matches, though in plainer fashion.
6- Carlito selects Tarver, who had lost all of his matches (all tag matches) because he lost his temper with his teammates and knocked them out and then left them for their opponents to beat (took a countout during the elimination match). Carlito loved the attitude.
7- Regal select Sheffield since his personally preferred choices were selected before. He selected Skip because at least Sheffield seemed to be open to learning from anyone that would teach him.
8- CM Punk skipped the show in protest. WWE management selects Young for him
At this point, much of how S1 went down could be done again if you like. The fans would have had more time to get to know the rookies and care about them.
