I'm going to work for a bit after my immediate family unwraps gifts before the rest of the family comes over and once more after everyone else leaves

I get to work tonight.... if you can call it that. My factory has someone "guard" the place when it's shut down for holidays, so tonight I'll get paid my regular Saturday overtime, plus holiday pay on top of it, to be all alone in a factory and pretty much just keep an eye on the place, make sure the doors are securely closed, nothing spontaneously starts on fire, etc. Other than that, I'll be getting paid to dink around on my laptop, sleep, whatever I can find to kill time. If I had planned better, this would have been the perfect opportunity for my band and I to shoot a video. (Nevermind that once the footage got out and it got back to the head honchos that I'd be fired on the spot...)

My boss convinced me to work four hours today at serving the public at a grocery store. Hell its triple time and I need the money.

(Nevermind that once the footage got out and it got back to the head honchos that I'd be fired on the spot...) Ah, "fire watch". I loved those. I'd volunteer to work Thanksgiving or Christmas (mostly midnights), take a walk about every hour, then hide in the trailer and play solitaire or geography games on the computer the rest of the time. (Had to be fast in volunteering, lot of guys rushed to get that "E-e-e-e-easy Money".) One Christmas I hid in the trailer 'cause it was cold in that factory. (If you're from a Northern state and move to the South, "their" 30 feels like "our" 50. Stay a year longer that same 30 feels like -10.) The foreman comes in at 6:30 am and asks me, "Weren't you cold? You could have turned the heater on if you wanted." I felt like such an idiot, but I got holiday pay to freeze.

Christmas, Thanksgiving, Black Friday (f*** that) and New Year's are the only days we're closed.

I had to work today. See, my normal work schedule is Wednesday - Sunday, and since Christmas fell on a Saturday this year, the company chose to recognize Christmas Eve as our day off, instead of Christmas Day. I'll face a similar situation next week, when I'll be off New Year's Eve but not New Year's Day.
It wasn't so bad except that for some reason, I couldn't sleep at all last night. I didn't even stay up that late, but no matter what I tried I was wide awake except for an hour or two. I managed to get through the day by putting those eight hours into perspective: it was the equivalent of watching four airings of A Christmas Story on TBS.

Me, because I live in Japan and Christmas isn't a public holiday here. My Winter Vacation just started, though, so I'll be able to go home and have a belated Christmas.

I'm at work right now. Missin' out on Christmas dinner.
However, getting paid double time and a half makes it a little be better
