If you have a good TV capable of progressive scan (which if you have an HDTV, you do), I'd just get the Wii instead. Unless you can hunt down the component cables for the 'Cube, which are really freakin' expensive as Nintendo just didn't bother with making them after awhile. The problem is he wants to use the GBA Player, which is NOT Wii-compatible. Yeah, that's the caveat. I guess a used GC is cheap enough where you can just use it as a GBA TV turner and stick to playing GC games on the Wii. Of course, if you just have a standard def TV, this is a non-issue. Go with a cheap GC and if you have the port on the TV, pick up a pair of S-Video cables. A universal, GC-compatible pair should be pretty easy to find and still fairly cheap.

I absolutely love the GameCube.
Eternal Darkness, Viewtiful Joe, the Zelda games, Melee, Skies of Arcadia, Baten Kaitos, and Tales of Symphonia are all some of my big time favorites, and they're all on there.

For the record, my girlfriend owns a Wii and even has a few Gamecube games herself. But I'd like a Gamecube for my place and, as has been mentioned, a Wii can't use the Game Boy Player.

Def Jam: Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight for New York (if you don't have them for PS2/XBox)
AKI FTW.

The GameCube is essentially the Wii but with a good collection of games and a controller that doesn't make you look like a complete tool in front of your TV, so yeah.
And there are at least two good reasons to get one: Metroid Prime and Eternal Darkness. That alone justifies the purchase.

It has, in my opinion, the best Resident Evil, the best Super Smash Bros. and the best Metroid. Oh, and two great Megaman anthologies.

That was something I collected a lot of on GameCube: I got the two Zelda's Collectors discs (one with Ocarina of Time and OoT: Master Quest, the other with a bunch of the older Zelda games except Link to the Past), two Mega Man collections (MM 1-8 and the Mega Man X one), and two Sonic classics Collections.
It was like having a Virtual Console before they made one. Love it.

Mario Sunshine is essentially Epic Mickey, but with the everyone's favourite plumber. Quality, if not the hardest Mario game I feel.

Wario Ware Inc (and probably the other Wario Ware GBA title that I never played) Slight problem with that: Wario Ware: Twisted! can't really be played on the GBA player. It has a gyro sensor which requires you to hold onto the system to be able to turn it properly. Holding a GameCube might be just a little bit too unwieldy.

I love mine, but the only problem is finding places to purchase games
