I have my reasons. Namely, as someone who still plays GBA games, I'd like to be able to play them on my TV with a Game Boy Player. There's also a nice mess of games I've never really played that I'd like to look into. Plus, I could get one for pretty cheap these days.
So, good idea? Bad idea? Any recommendations?

I was never big into the Gamecube, but there are some great games. Super Smash Bros. Melee, obviously, but stuff like Animal Crossing, Pikmin, and Wind Waker are pretty awesome, as well. Oh, and Eternal Darkness, if you're into the survival horror stuff.

I play my Gamecube games on my Wii. But I still have my Gamecube in good condition as a backup if needed. Oh, and another recommendation is Sonic Gems Collection.

F-Zero GX is still the best racing game ever made. That's really all I came in here to say.

Others have already named some awesome GCN games so there's no point in trying to add to the list. But there are also some great GBA games that would be much better through the GBA player. I'll give some recommendations since you did mention that as one of your reasons for wanting a Gamecube.
Fire Pro Wrestling 1 & 2. Both games are amazing even for GBA wrestling titles.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is a fantastic little game that I just started playing about a week ago. I'm around 20 hours in and finally at the end.
Wario Ware Inc (and probably the other Wario Ware GBA title that I never played)
Legend of Zelda The Minish Cap was pretty fun.
Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland and Kirby's Magic Mirror both got good reviews, though I haven't played them yet. Same thing with Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories.
There's also a ton of NES and SNES ports. Super Mario Bros. 1-3, Super Mario World, Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 4 and 5 to name a few.
Hell the GBA is basically an RPG monster. There's sooo many good RPG titles for it that I don't even want to attempt naming them all. Playing those games on a big screen would just make them that much more enjoyable. I say go for it dude, the Gamecube is a very underrated little console.

I also usually play GameCube games on my Wii, with one exception.
And that exception is one of my recommendations! Here's my addition.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance Tales of Symphonia Skies of Arcadia Legends Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Both Pikmin games, they're both excellent Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg Baten Kaitos (and Origins) Battalion Wars

Unless you know a place to get one cheap or have one tucked away, most of the GBA player's i've seen are not cheap. Basically, the exact same price they were when they came out, if not more.

If you have a good TV capable of progressive scan (which if you have an HDTV, you do), I'd just get the Wii instead. Unless you can hunt down the component cables for the 'Cube, which are really freakin' expensive as Nintendo just didn't bother with making them after awhile.

The problem is he wants to use the GBA Player, which is NOT Wii-compatible.

I never owned one but my older brother did and from what I seen back then; I say it's worth it.
Games I do recommend: -Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker -Animal Crossing (And it has some of the old NES classics on here to play like Punchout & Ice Climber; if you don't have the original system or emulator)
-WWE: Day of Reckoning 2 -Viewtful Joe -Resident Evil 4

I would say no, it's a nightmare playing Warioware twisted on the Gameboy player.

If you can't raise enough money for a Wii ( backwards compatability y'know ) I say go for it. Most 2nd hand gamecube consoles I've seen are reasonably cheap and it does have a surprising array of really good games.

When I picked up my GCN last year (hell, it might have actually been earlier this year), I kind of went out of my way to look for some underappreciated games that still seemed like they'd be pretty fun (and ones that I didn't already have the PS2 version of), and came away with the likes of :
- Custom Robo - Gotcha Force - 1080 Avalanche - Lost Kingdoms - Hunter : The Reckoning
Sure, there's something to be said for "only" having the hits, so that when you run your collection through a site that averages the collection's review scores, it looks like you have elite tastes, but there's a lot of other stuff out there still worth playing.

I say go for it. The Gamecube is only about $30 in most second hand stores, and sometimes less. You don't really have much to lose.

Yeah, the GC is certainly worth it. The majority of the first party games are great fun and the controller is very comfy in your hands.
