Final Fight. But I also loved X-Men and The Simpsons arcade game. Aldo, Golden Axe was fun too.

I may be alone in this, but beat em ups really don't seem to hold up very well. I used to love the genre. I played the hell out of the Turtles games, Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Double Dragon...seriously couldn't get enough of those games in the NES/SNES era. Now that I'm an adult though, I can't stand to go back and play them. The ONLY one that I kind of enjoyed when I went back and played it recently was Turtles in Time, and even it wasn't as great as I remembered it.

I still like to play em when I just wanna beat something up mindlessly for a bit. It's a shame some of these series can't be resurrected for current gen consoles. DD has been dead since DDV was a crappy fighting game based on the cartoon, and the rest vanished in the 90's as well. I would like to give some props to Super Double Dragon, which seems to always be forgotten for whatever reason. First game on played on my SNES on Christmas morning when my brother and I got it.

Not really a "series" as much as it is a standalone game but The Warriors for PS2/Xbox/PSP is the greatest beat 'em up of all time.

Not quite dead. There was the GBA Remake of the original arcade game, which added techniques and enemies from Double Dragon 2 into the game.

I'll agree at least in part, they have aged quite a bit. I still love 'em and return to em from time to time; and have fun for a bit, but they do get kinda dull really quickly, and I'm usually only playing back through them haphazardly while watching tv or something else.

Turtles without a doubt, with Streets of Rage and Final Fights slightly trailing behind. Obviously, my favorite beat-em-up ever was TMNT 4: Turtles in Time for the SNES and it has exceptional replay value even to this very day...surprising for a game that can be finished in 35 minutes on Hard. My second favorite in the series was TMNT 3 on the NES and after that, TMNT 2. I also really liked Hyperstone Heist on the Genesis which had fewer but longer levels compared to TMNT 4's greater, short levels.
Final Fight 2 personally is my favorite with Final Fight 3 being my second faovrite. Final Fight 1 is my least favorite here.
Ditto for Streets of Rage game preferences.
My favorite Double Dragon is SUper Double Dragon for the SNES followed by Double Dragon 2. I liked Double Dragon 3 after I learned how to play properly the game and DOuble Dragon I is still a classic.
Other beat-em-ups I love are the X-Men Legends series, the Warriors, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Batman Returns on the SNES, KNIGHTS OF THE ROUNDTABLE (I really love that game), King of Dragons, Death & Return of Superman, Splatterhouses, Spider-Man arcade, Two Crude Dudes, Ninja Warriors, X-Men and the Jaleco trilogy (Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers and Peace Keepers).
