I've said enough about how awesome TMNT and X-Men are in the past. This is impossible. The awesomeness of the X-Men arcade game can never be spoken of enough.

Rampage, Ghosts N Goblins and the original Mario Bros (pre-Super Mario) all took hundreds of dollars in my quarters. Loved that era. Elevator Action, Tron, Journey's game, Punchout...just a lot of memories.
Just curious for those who might know - are there still any *classic* arcade games (straight up joystick/button variety) that never saw a faithful port to home console?

I also loved the experimental games, even if they sucked in execution. For instance, "Time Traveler"... Sega's "Holographic" game. I totally agree with you. I bought the PS2 copy from Gamestop for $2 with the 3-D glasses. Every now and then my friends and I bust it out. I am a product of the mid-80's thru late 90's arcade games, back when you wanted to see who came out with a better arcade port between the NES and Sega Master System or the SNES and Genesis. I loved those days. My arcade faves were Double Dragon, Rampage, TMNT, WWF Wrestlefest, Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter 2 and MK 1 & 2. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of them, but man, I spent so much time and money in the arcades back in the day. I so miss that atmosphere.

My hometown has a bowling alley that had a few arcade games.
TMNT, NBA Jam, Rampage, and few other that I can't remember have about $100+ in quarters from me.

I lost track of how much of my dad's money I spend on Pac-Man while he was bowling when I was little. Throw in Q-Bert, Centipede, The Simpsons, TMNT, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter 2, the Vs. games, Mortal Kombat 2 + 3, House of the Dead, Time Crisis...jeez. Damn I miss our old mini golf we had here with the arcade. The movie theater just doesn't cut it.

I still remember beating Revolution X in the area that led into Wal-Mart. I was in middle school and a metalhead in his 20's had a roll of quarters on the cabinet and was insistant on beating it. I joined him and he even leant me quite a few quarters, but we finally got through it.
Then at the rollerskating place, they had Area 51. My friend and I got insanely good at it to the point people would pay us to keep playing.

I've spent soooo much money on Marvel vs. Capcom 2, The Simpsons, Time Crisis, Silent Scope, and House of the Dead. There's an arcade about a minute away from my house that is still doing pretty well. Haven't gone in a while though.

Awful ports. Fun enough, if flawed, arcade game. My local arcade has it, costs one token per play.

...and for the win; After Burner from Sega games. Dude I loved this one and dropped almost as much on it as I did on Area 51.
Honorable Mentions: TMNT House of the Dead Time Crisis Ultimate MK3 NBA JAM

I'm positive I put literally a thousand dollars worth of quarters into both Street Fighter 2/Mortal Kombat machines over my lifespan.
EDIT: Maybe less now that I think about it, because once I got good there was a point where I would be playing like 10 challengers in a row off my original quarter.

I am personally lucky to still have an amazing arcade near where I live (Trocadero in the heart of London)
I've been a regular there for years and it's always about the times we'd get the newest fighting games at the same time as Japanese or American Arcades (These include both Street Fighter IV AND Tekken 6 about a year before they came out on consoles). Place would get packed to the brim, I always went to either the Dancing Game section (with DDR, Pump it up and In The Groove) or the fighting game section (with T6, SFIV, 3rd Strike, Alpha 3, Soul Calibur, King of Fighters XI, Capcom vs SNK 2...just way too many to name)
But if you're talking about WAY back, for me it was the days of Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, House of the Dead (was the first person in the UK to complete HotD4, SO YAY!), RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDGE RACER!.
Good ol days bring a tear to my eye ;_;

I recall one of those horrid package holidays my mum would drag us on. We spent the near two week trying to clock House of the Dead 2, and we did. Unfortunately, There was so little else in the way of fun, that we did it again, and again, and again. So much so, that when I got it on the Wii, I couldn't even eek out a challenge on expert, I knew the thing turn for turn.

Wow, that is pretty cool. I don't recall ever playing that in arcades for some reason. I remember playing WWF Wrestlefest, WWF Superstars, WWF Wrestlemania The Arcade Game and WWF Royal Rumble, but I guess this one passed me by. Hmm...

Nothing will replace the early-'80s, where every little coffee shop had at least a Ms. Pac-Man to play. Didn't matter where it was, there was always "that one guy" who would get up to Banana level and have a crowd 4-5 people deep watching him play.
Never had that kind of experience, except maybe a couple of people watching me play Zookeeper. (Simple little game; animals are breaking through your wall and your entire goal was to keep the wall built around them by running around in rectangular form. I spent way too much time on that silly, little game, but it's really addicting.)
(The other day, I watched a documentary titled "The King Of Kong", about the quest of a guy trying to break the Donkey Kong world record. If you have a Netflix queue, I highly recommend giving it a watch. Some of those people take that stuff very seriously, as you will see.)
