Here's the situation I'm in...I had a friend give me a load of heavy metal to check out...but I'm running out of space on my music player...and...I'm looking to keep what is considered "the best" on there for now...yeah lol. Here's the question, is there a website that has, like, rankings of albums by band? A site that would include bands such as...Amon Amarth, Angra, Pagan's Mind, Nightwish, Nile, Dimmu Borgir, Jag Panzer... Any help is appreciated

I can tell you this much, while not a huge metalhead. I have never heard of a single one of those bands.

You have a ton of music, and you want to keep 'the best' of it on your player. So, you want to find a website that lists the music and it's reviews...
Why not just listen to the music and keep what you like? Forget what other people say or write about it, you like what you like.

There are so many types of metal, hard to say whats "the best". Out of your list, I LOVE Amon Amarth and Nightwish.. and both are radically different bands. For fun, two of my favorite songs by said bands:

I know all the bands you have mentioned. They are all pretty different. My advice; listen to them all and find what you like best. Or post some of your favorite metal bands and we'll steer you in the right direction as to what you might like. However don't be afraid to explore, there's a lot of good music out their for the unprejudiced mind to discover. Also screw reviews, don't let anyone else decided for you what music to enjoy.

Yeah in order to help you in any way we will need to know what metal you already enjoy greatly. There are sooooooo many different types of metal its hard to say what is better in what ways or to whom.

If you want good metal, delete all that crap and load up your ipod with Metallica, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden.

I would also suggest Warbringer, Toxic Holocaust, Cross Examination, Terra Caput Mundi, ThorHammer, Everything Went Black, Dude Nukem, Die Wasted, Black Breath, Eville, Havoc, Skeleton Witch, Kreator, Exodus, Storm Troopers of Death, Mastodon, Blacklisted, Venom and Cobrangutan

You warned him about someone making a recommendation?
The OP's friend gave them a selection of metal that probably isn't best for newbies. It's the type of stuff that you get into once you discover what sub-genres you like. I'm not knocking the bands themselves, they just aren't ideal for someone who has never listened to metal before. It would be like giving a NATAS album to someone as their first exposure to hip-hop.
The three I recommended were because, as a metal newbie they are great yet accessible bands, as well as blueprints of sorts for what metal is at it's core. The OP can decide what they like from stuff that's more mainstream accessible, and then delve into sub-genres that take what they like further.
And please don't turn this into Megadeth vs. Metallica. They are both awesome, and the argument was tired 20 years ago.

Honestly, I initially thought that you were talking about the Heavy Metal comic series.

depends on what genres you like. I could name off tonnes of amazing Black Metal bands, but if it's not what you're looking for it won't be any help to you. what kind of heavy metal do you like?

The thing about metal it is so diverse, you can find something you like that no one else likes and that's OK! XD Like whatever you want and don't care about what anyone says now that's metal, i say IMHO don't listen to anything on here and find your own taste in the Giga-ton genre known as Metal!!!!

I'm not very well versed on metal, but I'm somewhat familiar with the genre. I can recommend Bal-Sagoth. Fantasy inspired heroic black metal. Totally epic in every sense of the word.

Bal Sagoth is awesome.... although i think they try to break the worlds record for the longest song title in the world with every album release!
