How could you not like a band with song titles such as "And Lo, When the Imperium Marches Against Gul-Kothoth, Then Dark Sorceries Shall Enshroud the Citadel of the Obsidian Crown" and "Cry Havoc for Glory, and the Annihilation of the Titans of Chaos (The Splendour of a Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath the Blazon of the Hyperborean Empire: Part III)"?

In MY opinion you should give Nightwish & Dimmu Borgir a listen.
Not saying you shouldn't listen to the others but i'm a fan of those 2. It all depends on what other Metal you like.

If you do listen to Dimmu Borgir only listen to the first 4 albums although maybe just the first 2.

You warned him about someone making a recommendation? The OP's friend gave them a selection of metal that probably isn't best for newbies. It's the type of stuff that you get into once you discover what sub-genres you like. I'm not knocking the bands themselves, they just aren't ideal for someone who has never listened to metal before. It would be like giving a NATAS album to someone as their first exposure to hip-hop. The three I recommended were because, as a metal newbie they are great yet accessible bands, as well as blueprints of sorts for what metal is at it's core. The OP can decide what they like from stuff that's more mainstream accessible, and then delve into sub-genres that take what they like further. And please don't turn this into Megadeth vs. Metallica. They are both awesome, and the argument was tired 20 years ago. What those three bands are are the most famous among metal. What makes you so sure he wouldn't enjoy some of the bands of the subgenres more than metallica, megadeth ,iron maiden? I know a few people who ignored metal up until they listend to nightwish and other of the same genre. Not everybody who first wants to enjoy metal has to go through some sort of training program according to other people's taste. It's limiting what type of metal exists. Yeah, they are the blue print to a lot of bands, but so are quite a few other less known bands from the some time. I'm a fan of megadeth, iron maiden and classic metallica, but I wouldn't limit metal to just those guys.

I'm by no means a metal newbie. I just have to admit, I don't have a long list of favorites when it comes to bands. I'm a pretty big Motorhead fan (as you may be able to tell by my sig), also really like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Black Sabbath, Dio...I really appreciate the old school stuff more than anything. I think it may be hard to pick a direction to go in as far as sub-genres of heavy metal go, considering that these bands are basically the foundation of all that is metal today...you could really go anywhere from there and hear the influence they had in all the bands that followed.
Also have to say I'm a fairly big thrash metal fan. I like stuff from Sepultura, Sodom, Overkill, the big four of course....but I'm looking to give it a break since there is a scene here in L.A. that quite honestly, I've grown sick of. Not saying I don't like those bands anymore, its just that this has encouraged me to look in to the different sorts of metal.
Again guys, I appreciate your advice and suggestions.
