Well once again snow has crippled the UK. Something like 6 inches and it all comes to a grinding halt. Especially in Surrey but I'm sure the north of England is having a tough time.
To travel a normally twenty minute journey from work took me 6 and half hours yesterday, got home at 11:30 at night.
So yay for snow, boo for doing anything practical in England when it settles.

The University in Hull has shut down today (Fortunatly, saving me a trek inside. One of my classmates was not so lucky...)
Based on friends reactions on facebook, Sheffield is also all closed up.
Same for back home in my small town of Grimsby. The schools, colleges and shopping centre are all closed down.
We are possibly the one country in the world that would sit through an atom bomb and still complain about the football. But throw a snowball at us and we'll surrender in a heart beat.

I'll never understand the English reaction to snow. I stayed in Brighton last year and the entire city shut down because of some frost. In fact, the entire city shit down for THIS much frost. No buses, no uni, a load of shut shops. Nothing. We didn't get the snow until about Saturday night, but yesterday afternoon it was past my knees. And it's been snowing since then, so I'm probably going to have to leave about an hour earlier than usual just to get along the street this afternoon. Another way to put it is... Dear England. Get on with it. And no, we're not used to it, so stop using that defense every time I laugh at you for being scared of a little snow. Yours constantly begrudgingly, Scotland.

Man I would love it if just a few inches of snow did that kind of damage in Oklahoma......we pretty much need a foot of snow before even discussing the idea of closing everything up over here.
Ice, on the other hand, is taken much more seriously here. It just needs to be about half an inch of ice and boom, everything either closes shop or slows down until the ice is gone.

Our local news service advised that they have more grit/rock salt than "they know what to do with". Which would be great, were it not for the fact that a year or two ago, as part of the "environmentally friendly" push, the local council upgraded all of the public service vans and wagons to more using more eco wise "green" diesel.
There is a problem with this. Green diesel has a far higher freezing point than regular diesel or petrol/gasoline. The upshot being that the moment the temperature drops to anywhere near zero, every converted van, truck and wagon grinds to a halt as the fuel literally freezes solid in the tank.
The solution - keeping all of the councils transport vehicles inside during the cold weather, and ensuring that the warehouses/garages are kept sufficiently warm to prevent the fuel from solidifying, kind of wipes out any of the money that they may have saved by converting the things in the first place...

I spent a winter in Finland once, where it regularly snows, and to depths that'd make the English government faint. You can stand witness to nutjobs speeding down iced over motorways, and at about 100mph. The Finnish have the right idea, really.

Just been out shopping in Bradford, pretty deep snow and showing (s)no(w) signs of stopping. However, a cool moment arose when this tune began playing on my MP3 player...
Seemed quite appropriate, y'know?

I'm stranded at home, but my University is still open! So I still have a bit of guilt for not going in

I need to move further north. Southampton is completely clear and simply cold.
I still have to go to work in a minute.
So unfair

HAHAHAHAHA
Really? That's all it takes.
In West Michigan, my university closed something like twice in twenty years, and we get SNOW. Foot or more sometimes. Average annual snowfall of 65 inches or so.
Unfortunately, despite the fact that we get snow on a regular basis aka seasonally EVERY YEAR, people always seem to forget how to drive when it hits.

It's snowing right now in my part of Michigan too.Nothing is shut down because were hardcore. It's because of your inability to handle snow that you lost your Empire.

Average annual snowfall of 65 inches or so. Unfortunately, despite the fact that we get snow on a regular basis aka seasonally EVERY YEAR, people always seem to forget how to drive when it hits. Happens the same way in Northern Wisconsin, but we always seem to get mixed precipitation. You know, it starts out as straight out rain, then turns to freezing rain, then to sleet, back to freezing rain, then to snow. When I stepped outside this morning to start my vehicle so it could warm up at work, it was 17 degrees out, and that is going to be the high for the day ...So right now we're getting straight up snow, which would be bad except those assclowns who are supposed to clear my road haven't even put chemicals down from the ice we got yesterday morning, so now all of us who live on that road are going to have to deal with snow over the ice, because if they've let it go this far, they'll probably let it go until tomorrow, when it's supposed to storm again ...

And it's official. We've hit the 2 foot mark here in Edgeville. I'm going to get some orange food colouring and make a Snow-Sheamus. Actually, I'm too cold. I'm going to make a little snowfella on the window ledge.
