So two shows that I watch more often than not are Cheaters as well as To Catch a Predator. Both deal with busting people doing things they shouldnt be doing.
However one thing that bothers me about cheaters and in some cases makes some episodes unwatchable when both of the guilty parties refuse to have themselves revealed & thier identities are withheld and thier faces are blurred out while the episode airs.
Meanwhile on to catch a predator there is no blurring and people real names are used and such. You'd think that it would be the other way around.
If I was that kind of guy I definately would much rather get caught cheating on someone then be caught on TCAP. Yet there are never blurred faces on that show.
So does that give the pervs on that show a lesser sentence if they agree to be on the show or something?
It's one of life's big mysteries for me...........

Cheaters is bullshit isn't it?
And they just blur it to make it seem real?

Cheaters is bulls*** isn't it? And they just blur it to make it seem real? Oh man...I hope not. I'm not sure why there aren't blurred faces on To Catch a Predator really. I mean, the blurring is definitely not BS because it's on stuff like Cops. Unless someone wants to just completely shatter my world by telling me that Cops is staged too. In that case I may just never watch TV again.

I've seen clips of some totally unrealistic shit...how do they always seem to find the people that are cheating but doing it with some crazy gimmicky thing too?

It has to do with the fact that people appearing on tv have to sign a release form. If they don't, their faces will be blurred when shown on tv - without that release form people can sue. There are other reasons as well: people can request not to be shown (for whatever reason).

I think I'd much rather be blurred, than having people see me and recognize me as the kind of guy who tries to have sex with underage kids.

Given how sexual predators must make it very clear that they are sexual predators, maybe they no longer have the option to say no.

I'm not a lawyer so I'm not sure how they get away with that. It must have to do with the nature of what happens during filming? They're involved with a criminal act so it therefore makes the release form unnecessary?

I've worked in the media as a crime reporter, so if I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that if something is entered into evidence in a criminal investigation, that could be released once the investigation had ended as public record. If a news organization gets this footage from the police, they don't have to have a release. We used to get footage released by the police fairly often. You also don't have to get consent from the arrested to run a mug-shot. Similar deal, I'd imagine. Cheaters would be different, because they aren't part of a criminal investigation. So you couldn't claim public record, thus they'd have to sign a release form.

Perverted-Justice (the group behind TCAP) has received loads of criticism for doing this (not to mention, criticism for how they operate in general).

I know they had been criticized for potential conflicts of interest, creating news, and possibly entrapping people, but I never heard any illegalities with broadcasting the footage itself, other than the fact that it's done before the cases are completed.
