I keep getting this with my Dad. He knows that I like quite a few animated movies in recent history like Up and How To Train Your Dragon. He wanted to watch them just to try and bond/relate to me, but didn't like them at all. I think he just doesn't like animated films at all because they are "kids" movies.
I also get this with my friends at school whenever I say Toy Story 3 is my favorite film this year. They all say Incpetion and don't like the fact that Toy Story 3 is getting a Best Picture nod this year.
So why else do people hate Animated Movies without giving it a fair chance?
Note: I don't think every animated film is good, but some of the best films do come from animation.

Hey at least your dad gave them a chance, mine doesn't even do that. If he asks what I'm watching and I say something like Toy Story or Lion King or Finding Nemo, he immediately scoffs and tells me to grow up. Same with my mam actually. Doesn't half get on my nerves Seems to be that many folks can't seem to get past thinking animated=childish instead of atcually giving the movies a chance. My mam actually watched Finding Nemo and (animated) Alice in Wonderland and enjoyed both, still doesn't stop her from scoffing at other animated films despite not watching them or giving them a chance.

It definitely has to do with the stigma of cartoons(save for the cartoons on Fox) = for kids.
If only the rest of the world had the same view of animation that Japan does. And no....I don't mean THAT view, I mean the idea that animation can be for all ages, anyone can enjoy animation.

I dont *hate* em, but to me there is something very off putting about the humor, I dont hate the medium Its just in the US animation goes hand in hand mostly with pg for kids and their PC castrated parents humor, packed with slapstick, light toilet humor and silly faces(especially dreamworks), I do catch those movies when they are on tv, someone lends me the dvd or something like that, like I say I dont hate on them but cant totally appreciate why someone would.

People keep saying animated movies aren't just for kids, yet every one I've seen was filled with kiddie humor.

My mom is one of those people. I've tried to explain to here that Pixar's films are fantastic pieces of work with well developed characters, strong scripts and the use of emotion without being manuplative of the audience. She responds "I don't like cartoons"

It's not Western, but seriously, some of these people need to watch "Grave of the Fireflies" and then get back to us.

Yeah, most WESTERN animation does have a lot of kid humor, but no one ever said we were limiting this to Western animation. People should be watching more Japanese animation films. Hardly any of those, save for the ones that are just a spin-off from an anime series, are kid-centric. Even the ones that look like they are made for kids, like the Studio Ghibli films, are more aimed at adults in their themes and messages.

I wouldn't say Pixar films are full of "kiddy humour"
In fact, the humour isn't really the appeal of western animation at all imo. Okay, there are a few kiddy jokes in them but imo it's the fun plot and great characters in Pixar films that make them awesome rather than them been funny.
Like WALL-E, that's not really a funny film chock full of jokes but it is really good. Same as Finding Nemo.
The characters are the main strong point in western animated films. All the main characters are pretty memorable and stand out, more-so than characters in live-action films, the majority of which are pretty 2-dimensional.
There are exceptions of course but really, take your typical live-action film, say an Action Thriller and the characters are pretty much 2D and generic who personality wise are indistiguishable from characters from the countless action films that appeared before.
I guess with animated films, it gives the directors/writers alot more scope to make their characters so they're fun, exciting and different whereas live-action directors are kinda handicapped by "realism"

Pixar, especially recently, has been making films that feel Studio Ghibli-ish.

Koda, I agree about anime being adult, im not a huge fan in the sense I hanvent seen much, but the most talked about stuff I do see and tend to like, theres a whole other set of reasons one might not like anime (not geting a lot of the cultural references an behaviors, the most common one), but it being kid centric would be a rather dumb non real one. I just felt the OPs post was more western pixar, disney, dreamworks kind of thing...
Fella!, I agree Pixar is the most, adult enjoyable of those kind of companies, they are fantastic craftsman and storytellers, I actually loved Up and Wall e, but despite seeing their value and how good movies they are for their target audiences I will never sit tru a lot of their films, ratatuille, cars(yuck), the invincibles, and even te ballyhooed nemo, I saw em, was mildly entertained, saw they were good movies for their audience but they are just not movies i conect to on a deep level, same goes for everything disney I didnt grow up with when I was a kid. Dreamoworks I tend to not be able to stand for long, I often just en up watching the whole thing if im siting with someone that likes em, but would never ever see on my own.

How could someone not like WALL-E? I just....can't understand that. I hate Wall-E. I like every other Pixar movie even though I'm not big on Toy Story and Toy Story 2(haven't seen 3). I find Wall-E just incredibly dull. When I watched it in theaters,I didn't care for it but thought on a second viewing that I may like it more. I hated it more the second time. I know it's loved by most people(even though one of my friends said she doesn't like it either) but I just didn't like it at all. Otherwise,I love animated movies. That is what I watch the most of. The Lion King is my all time favorite movie and Up is in the top 5. I don't see how anyone can hate all animated movies. Even my Dad who mainly just watches old Westerns likes some animated movies.

It's the same thing with comic books. People believe that when it's drawn out, it must be for kids. Of course, I was little when I first got into The Simpsons and I wondered why a cartoon aired on primetime. It seems like when it's something like Simpsons or Family Guy, it's an exception. Of course, Fritz The Cat came out in the 70s and that was one of the first adult cartoons ever. My comparison with comics has to do with how people think that comics are kids stuff when there are lots of adult comics out there.
