I'm currently in an argument on another board where the poster refers to her as a congressman...even though she's a woman. Would you call a woman delivering your mail a mailman? I can understand using gender non-specific terms like "representative" or "senator" or "mail carrier," but you can't call a woman a congressman. That makes zero sense. I've heard both throughout the day. I suppose if you want to play save, go for the gender neutral "Representative" title. Or Congresswoman.

geez, how do you survive that? I heard one doctor on Fox News talk about how this may have happened. Overall, if you get shot in the head/brain, you only have a 5% chance of surviving. That chance shrinks even more if the bullet hits both hemispheres of the brain. If it only hits one hemisphere, there is a better chance of survival (not full recovery, just survival). About a year ago, there was a guy in southern Arizona who killed his wife and kids, then tried to take his own life by shooting himself in the head. But it didn't work out, because he quickly realized he had two holes in his head, but was still functioning. He even called police afterwards. Cops came over and he answered the door wearing a towel wrapped around his head. He sounded like someone who was fatigued and had big migraine headache, not like someone who had shot himself in the freakin' head. As my mom says, "sometimes it's just not your time."

The "PC" term is Congressperson, but I've followed the story on Fox News (don't start), and they keep calling her Congresswoman. ____man is usually open enough where you can change the postfix to "woman" and it will still be acceptable.

I keep seeing "congresswoman" used on AP reports. And if the AP uses it, it's fine.

From AP, Arizona Daily Star, and Pima Co. Sheriff's Office. The guy on your left is Jared Loughner, the suspected shooter. The guy on your right is believed to be the other man involved in the shooting. He is still on the loose. An interesting and odd tidbit from one of the witnesses. He says he saw one man run away from the crowd and the supermarket just moments before the shooting happened. Don't know if maybe that was the second guy.

I refer to the woman who delivers my mail as a mailman. Just used to saying mailman I guess. Same with congressman. I think technically man can be used with a gender-neutral meaning, like mankind and such. Also, I'll say what others already have about the no-politics rule. There was another forum I used to visit a lot, now barely ever, that pretty much got ruined because of politics. A lot of people left and now people there are prone to pointless bickering. It's refreshing to have a forum that doesn't even touch the subject.

OK, just had an update from the medical center and here is what we know.
All of the patients involved in the shooting, save one, have been moved out of ICU into regular hospital settings. Conditions range from serious to good with one discharged.
The one exception is, of course, Congresswoman Gifford. She is in ICU in a medically induced coma after two hours of surgery to mitigate trauma to her brain following the shooting. She was shot in the left side of the head with the track of the bullet going back to front through the left hemisphere of the brain. This left hemisphere is what would normally control speech and motor functions to the right side of the body. She is, when brought out of the coma and asked, able to respond to simple commands, such as moving her fingers. Given she is on a breathing device, she cannot respond vocally. The biggest concern right now is the possibility of brain swelling which may cause further trauma.
Anything more than that is pure speculation, especially in terms of recovery and length of time. One thing should be made very clear and that is she is very very lucky right now. Please continue to keep her and all victims of this act of violence in your thoughts and prayers today.
Hospital is supposed to do updates daily around 10 AM Tuscon time, but will update if something dramatic changes.

I can understand using gender non-specific terms like "representative" or "senator" or "mail carrier," but you can't call a woman a congressman. That makes zero sense. At work, a female journeyman is still called a journeyman, and when the girls go to get their ticket, they refer to it as getting their "journeyman's". So, it could be just a gender neutral thing. Anyway, I've argued that political discussions should be allowed on like, a separate sub-board and only there, well, maybe when I request that I didn't make it clear. Obviously this would be a bad spot for politics to come up. And for people mature enough. My fear though is while she survived, what part of her brain will this effect in the long run, and I really hope they help her out with that as I'm assuming there are going to be some changes in her behaviour based on being shot in the head. So I hope that they tell her where in the brain she was shot, and help her out with any handicaps she's going to have due to damage to that part.

What's even scarier to me is that the happy-go-lucky looking guy is the (suspected) shooter.

I don't know if it's appropriate to say it, but I can't help but think Taxi Driver, but the difference is, what if Travis actually went with the shooting.
If it's inappropriate, I apologize.

I read on yahoo that the 9 year old girl that was killed in the shooting is the granddaughter of long-time major league manager Dallas Greene. This is a terrible tragedy. I hope all of the wounded have a full and speedy recovery. I hope the gunman has a full and speedy dose of justice.

I remember a movie called Regarding Henry where Harrison Ford played a lawyer who got shot in the head by a robber. I could not imagine how long it will take the congresswoman to remember everything (if she even eventually does) and I am not sure I would want to remember the horror of that incident.
There are things I forget all the time and some of them, I am glad I have forgotten.........like blacking out in the car.

This has been a horrible tragedy, and I'm glad I can post my condolences here. Other places I've gone on the interweb some people are callous enough to use this event to spout their political agenda.
So my condolences go out to everyone who was affected by this.
