I think that Laura Linney would have probably done alright. I will say, though, that in my opinion no actress has half the presence of the great women of the 30s/40s like Davis, Crawford and Stanwyck. There are actresses today that might have been able to function in that time but I doubt they would have been able to reach the same levels of success.
EDIT: That said, today's actresses are working in a very different world than before, and aren't really afforded the opportunities to show strength in performance to the same degree. They're largely untested.
