So I finally finished Lost the other day after being way behind the rest of the world (I started watching it around October), and I'm pretty bummed out how the show went downhill.
Those first three seasons were fantastic, but then things got cheesy, convoluted and contrived at the halfway point. I actually had a friend who warned me this would happen, but I decided to stick with the show all the way through and there were times (especially during early season six) when all of the Temple and kung-fu master and ridiculous murders turned me off from watching it altogether for a few weeks.
The series finale itself left me hollow. I wasn't crazy about the excess of montages and even though the final "real-life" scene was moving, the sideways mumbo jumbo just didn't do anything for me. So many important characters were missing (Michael and Walt in particular) that I was reminded of things like contract negotiations instead of how big of a reunion this was.
I missed the reactions to the finale and series overall here, so catch me up. Were there any vicious debates over this show that I should skim through the forum archives for? Also, did the show ever jump the shark for you? What was your biggest question that was never answered?

I watched Lost the whole time it was on the air from 2004 to 2010. I put up with the months of waiting for new seasons, the occasional weeks of waiting just for a new episode, everything. I loved it all.
The show never jumped the shark to me but I almost stopped watching after the first portion of Season 3. ABC showed the first 6 lackluster episodes then went straight into a 3 month break and I almost gave up.
Season 4 was the best to me, followed by 1, 6, 3, 5, and 2, but every season had its bright spots.
There has always been debate about the ending among hardcore fans. Ironically enough, tying into the shows faith vs. science theme, I've found that many of the fans who were mostly watching it for the mystery and sci-fi aspects (science) left disappointed, whereas the people that were there for the characters, the story, and the themes were left satisfied.
I loved the way at ended on an emotional level, but there was much more that could have been revealed. The biggest thing to me was I would have really liked to know more about The others. Where they came from, how they were selected, what life was like for them, etc. It bothered me how Cindy the flight attendant somehow became part of their society and they never really went into that.
My BIGGEST problem with the final season was the episode centering around Jacob and the Man in Black. I did NOT feel like Jacob came out looking like the good guy, but was a petty douche keeping his brother on the island and helping his psycho-ass "mom". Added with the fact that it was Jacob who brought everyone on 815 to the island in the first place to try and find a replacement, and most of them died, I couldn't help but feel like their lives were wasted on this douches sick little game.

It's late so I won't say everything in detail, but I loved, loved, LOVED Lost from seasons 1-5, but that last season was honestly a piece of s***.
I had so many great memories of Lost. Watching each week, trying to pick everything apart and piece together the puzzle with friends and on the message boards. I couldn't wait to find out about the island's past, the Jacob/Man In Black storyline, the ship, the meaning of the numbers, the broken statue etc. Counting down the days until the new season started, and dreading the days leading up to the finale, because they always ended with a great cliffhanger.
The final season was like a big f*** you to the fanbase. I have never seen such a good show take such a nose dive. I'd rather accept the finale of season 5 as the true ending, and try to forget everything I learned in 6, because it really hurt the series. The sideways world was so stupid. It turned into "Can you spot the cameo this week, or can you believe ____ is a ____ now?" rather then progressing the storyline.
It hurt the show so much, it's hard to even rewatch it now. But overall I have 5/6 years of great, awesome memories watching the show.
Last thing: The writer's backed themselves so far into a wall, that the series ended with more plot holes/unanswered questions then 10 years of WWE television. ;D

I didn't like the ending mostly cuz it was like "ok, every character died at some point, what does that have to do with anything?"

I started off enjoying it for the first 3 or 4 seasons, then they just seemed to go overboard with all the mysteries, twists and took too long to explain things that it just turned silly.
They seemed to focus too much on been unpredictable imo that the plot just turned into a big, confusing mess with inadequete explanations for things and plot points been dropped without explanation.
I didn't watch much of the final series at all, I just lost interest so maybe things were explained more there?

I've never bothered to watch Lost, but I do it kind of sad when a show that I like ends up getting to the point that it's nearly unwatchable towards the end.
Oz Season Five was sort of forgettable, and by Season Six they just decided to completely make it ridiculous (Killing off EVERYONE just about, the stupid storylines that made no sense, forgetting about stuff, not even having any sort of redemption for anyone)
Angel kind of has the same thing happen, only it's the rare example of a show having one really good final season after having a pretty bad season the year before.

Connor spoilt Angel series 4 for me. There's never been a character I've hated so much than that annoying dickweed. I did love when Faith beat him up though

Alleys were gone, characters got a radical shift, and Spike sucked up Wesley and Gunn's screentime. Not bad, just not the show we had for the previous four years.

I agree with Angel season 4 being pretty awful. Buffy season 4 was awful too.
As for Lost, I actually liked the WAY it ended, but they should have spent more of the season answering questions. Each episode of the final season should have contained an answer to a lingering question. Instead we got a stupid temple and a group of people that resided there, and a bunch more unanswered questions.
The dvd actually has an additional exclusive 15 minute episode that explains some stuff about Dharma and gives some follow-up to the seemingly dropped major storyline of Walt. Unfortunately, people should have gotten these answers (and many more) in the actual series itself.
Overall, I liked it. I admit being a little disappointed when it was all said and done, but I don't regret becoming emotionally invested in these characters for 6 years one bit.
