It wasn't a bad episode as much as it was tasteless for the sake of it. It was as if Seth was like, "See, I can challenge the FCC too!"

I thought it was a great episode. I'm sure it was too serious for a lot of people but that's what I liked about it. I felt it had a 12 Angry Men/Breakfast Club give to it.
Was it gross and pretty extreme? Sure but it wasn't gross and violent just to be gross and violent. It was smart with the themes which is something so many tv shows miss the mark on.

I remember hating it and mocking the ever present people who say "IT WAS GREAT" just so they could pretend to be smarter than everyone else, despite it being awful. But when I watched again a couple months ago, it was actually okay...

I don't agree with a lot of things Seth Macfarlen says especially politically but that doesn't mean I can't respect his work and like it. There have been worse Family Guy episodes.

I loved it because it was different from other Family Guy episodes and was character based and less gag based. It felt like something evolved, and that rarely happens on the show, of course it was all forgotten.

I'll write what I wrote the night the episode aired:
I watched the episode again when it aired this evening, and my opinion remains exactly the same as it did back in May.

It wasn't a bad episode as much as it was tasteless for the sake of it. It was as if Seth was like, "See, I can challenge the FCC too!" The toilet humor wasn't that bad; the only thing really tasteless in there was the Columbine joke. So the entire "Eat My Poo" dialogue wasn't tasteless? I'm not saying it was a bad episode.....but it highlights 3 major flaws in the show now. 1. Seth could do most of the show himself (Writing, V/O, Production) everything but the actual animation. 2. Stewie and Brian.....aren't that interesting as far as thier ACTUAL personalities. They get into interesting situations, and riff on those situations.....but if you're forced to focus on them rather than the "Wacky Hijinks" around them they're not exactly pleasant to be around. Essentially Family Guy is not a Character Driven series.....but a Plot Driven one. The characters react to the plot rather than attempting to shape it. Look at any of the "Road to...." Episodes, it's essentially one long riff during the journey with only the minimum of Plot Interaction from the main characters.....which coincidentally enough are.....Brian and Stewie. 3. Brian and Stewie are a BAD Vaudeville Duo. The basic rule is you have a straight man and the comedy man. The Straight Man feed sthe setups, straight lines, etc & the Comedy Man delivers the punchline. The Straight Man basically acts as a jumping off point....the Comedy Man carries the brunt of the act (Timing, Keeping the Joke Going, Judging Audience Reaction) but without the Straight Man to set up the jokes the Comedy Man may have to jump from topic to topic....becoming disjointed and ruining the flow of the dialogue. While the Straight Man is generally the "smarter" of the duo and a Deadpan Snarker, he can't take so much away from the Comedy Man or else the honest attempt at comedy will fall flat. Both characters are SO over the top in thier portrayals at times....it's hard to convincingly cast either as a Straight Man consistantly with each other when Brian plays the Straight Man to Peter so well. The oddest thing is that ALL the characters are portrayed by the SAME VA...so it's simply a matter of the individual character's personalities not meshing well with the Vaudeville Duo archetype.

Still the worst episode I've seen yet.
Sorry Seth, you can't sell me on a deep ending after a 10 minute shit eating joke.

It appears we have a vastly different definition of "smart". Arrested Development was smart, Party Down was smart, but a ten minute "eat my poop" joke can't be salvaged by a decent ending.

The pooh eating joke was really way to long and I don't understand why it was in there. I think sometimes Seth wants to do just a sweet story about characters but either he's scared that the fans will (no pun intended) dump on it or FOX wants something "edgy" or just that he feels the need to put that stuff in there to take some of the emotion out of the story. But it kind of ruins the rest of the emotional stuff

I thought it was very important to the plot. ;D Honestly that joke is part of why I liked it. I mean why not do it? Everyone does realize that we are critiquing and observing an episode about a cartoon dog and baby locked in a vault right? I'd say good job to the creators just based on that honestly. lol

I'm not really one of those people who thinks like that, but damn it gets annoying. It's one thing for someone to be like "oh, it wasn't bad", and its another for 30 people to show up the second something ends, no matter how mediocre or bad, to tell everyone else they just didn't "get it" and how it was brilliant and all that...

Yeah I know what you mean by that. I totally understand why a lot of people didn't like it. At the same time though I give them credit for changing things up and taking a risk. I personally thought they pulled off the episode really well. Hell it was better than half the crappy hollywood movies that come out now.
