I should add that while i dont care for over-the-top product placement, i do like the subversions where they take subtle shots at said product (ie, dispensor and the x-box transformer from transformers, or the scene in home alone where fuller wets the bed if he drinks pepsi).

I don't mind it it's something small and the camera doesn't get fixed to the LARSENS BISCUITS logo for full 5 seconds.

I love it when it is completely over the top. Like in Leonard Part 6 where he had a huge stock of Coca-Cola in his basement at the time that the Cos was a Coke spokesmen.

I really don't mind it much if it's subtle. That seems more real. You can go into a store or bar or some other place and you will see posters and ads for certain items.
When it's blatant, that's when it's outrageous.
In the film The Shadow, a scene with the scientist begins with a close up of an empty Pepsi bottle right in the foreground so the bottle is bigger than the character. It lingers for a few moments then the shot finally changes.
Mac and Me. The whole film is a commerical for McDonald's.
Mission to Mars. The scene where one character sends a packet of soda to another because he's thirsty. The camera holds on the packet coming closer and closer and it's a Dr Pepper packet. So for about a good 20 seconds or so, the camera is focused on the Dr Pepper ad. It actually made the audience crack up laughing.

All this talk of product placement sure builds up a man-sized appetite! I could go for a bowl of pulverized organ mash, basted in sweet intestinal bile fluids. I feel like re-energizing with the delicious taste of Sugarman's Potted Meat Food Product. Sugarman's. Meat like Grandma used to pot.

As long as its not too blatent and over the top it does not bother me. In fact, it is more distracting for me when they use real prodcuts but but tape or paint over part of the logo but leave the rest of it, making me try to figure out just what they are really drinking/eating etc..

I can't seem to read this thread...
~puts on quality, but affordable glasses from Lenscrafters~
Seriously, I guess I'd rather see that than Beer brand beer or Cigarette brand cigarettes.

But if its subtle then people aren't going to notice it and what's the point?

One that amused and annoyed me simultaneously was Dr. Pepper getting crowbarred into every single scene shot just for the American version of Godzilla 1985.

But if its subtle then people aren't going to notice it and what's the point? you'd be surprised how much your brain takes in subconsciously. You might not realize that your favorite film has 37 Moutain Dew ads in it, but your brain does.

Heck, some of the greatest scenes in films involve product placement. Remember superman throwing zod into the giant coke billboard in superman 2? And thats never made me want to drink coke (im a pepsi man anyway).

There are instances in movies where a product can be plugged and have it not totally take over the movie, for example Dr. Pepper is mentioned repeatedly in Forrest Gump. Dr. Pepper being mentioned does not totally take over the movie as was the case with everything being promoted in Mac and Me.

"Coming To America" was nothing but a 100-minute long commercial for McDowell's. It's been twenty-two years since I've seen this movie and I still can't find one of these. Do you know how frustrating that is?! I want a Big Mick, dammit.

Depends on the product and the placement.
