Crowd sweetener has been used for decades. Plenty of wrestling shows have used it. Old WWF shows made it seem like the crowd was really loving Doink and Dink. You never heard Hulk Hogan being booed because they fixed the audio. WCW used piped in Goldberg chants until it got over with the crowd. The reason for it is to make the audience at home believe that the wrestlers is over so when they see them again, their viewpoint is shape into the way the promotion wants it. This. It makes sense. Fake cheer for one city, so the next city gives the guy more real cheers and hope it bulids up. That's always been my thinking.

To be fair, how can you tell with JTG's segments? Seeing as it takes up the whole screen, the crowd could be doing backflips for all you know. ;D
Or the front 5 rows are just not that into it, while everyone else off camera is going insane.

The silly forced low pitched booing of Wade's Stable after beating down Big Show was so bad is was laughable.

The fact that they've been using the same canned pop since about 1999 is also laughable.

Worked well for Wade Barrett. Barrett, good as he is, had craaaaazy advantages compared to most lower card heels trying to get over. Jericho was one of the most hated heels in WWE when he promoted Barrett on NXT, and then Barrett went into feuding with the top face in the company. And THEN he got the opportunity to dominate and humiliate him for weeks to REALLY get the crowd to hate him... and then immediately when he gets his comeuppance, he's protected by not having to be on the same show with that guy anymore and getting a fresh start, while another good, experienced heel steps into the role of carrying on the shreds of Nexus against the dominant hero who's just beaten their collective ass. Again, Barrett's good, but he was given a TON in order to get him over. Give the same to some of the guys we're being critical of here, and see how they do.

I did find it hilarious how the crowd went 'wild' after Trent Barreta beat McIntyre, yet if you looked at the crowd the first 4-5 rows were sitting on their hands when he got the pin. As said, the dubbed crowd reaction has been going on for years now but I do agree that its been getting worse lately. I think its gotten to the point now where the WWE has screwed up the midcard so badly that they're literally having to dub in reactions for nearly every non-main eventer on the show apart from a couple of exceptions (e.g. Swagger and ABR). Its especially prevalent for Drew McIntyre. Last night they had to dub in reactions not only for his entrance (there is asolutely no way he gets anywhere near the amount of heat from the crowd they make him out to get), but also when Barreta beat him AND during the backstage beatdown when he met with Kelly Kelly. The writers can't face the fact that the guy isn't over. If it's all piped in, how do you decide that ADR and Swagger get genuine heat while Drew doesn't? It all seems to come down to personal preference. I was at the SD taping and watched it on TV. I can tell you that ADR did get real heat this week from the live crowd, and Swagger didn't get much -- that was definitely enhanced or piped in. Drew McIntyre got a babyface cheer -- pretty good pop, not over like Edge or Kofi, but few boos and a lot of cheers. The crowd wanted a squash. He got a really big pop when he threw Trent ass-over-teakettle into the corner. There was not much reaction when Trent won because the crowd didn't know him, figured him as a jobber and wanted the monster to squash him. The other thing you've got to figure into SD tapings, at least as it is now, is that you're already in the arena for about 2 hours before SD starts -- the NXT taping and then Superstars match pretty much sucked the life out of the crowd. Especially the NXT stuff: absolutely insanely boring for someone who came to see a wrestling show (or even sports entertainment, as NXT is neither).
