He would have been perfect. You got 21? He's got 22. Wanna play black jack? He's got some of those too. Wanna play aces and eights? Maybe he's got too many of those too. As depressing as Jake's failings are, references to that promo never stop being funny.

Jake Roberts wouldve been immense.
Personally, Sting, just for the OH S*** reaction would have been amazing.

Wasn't Jake pretty much coked out of his skull by that point? Sorta what I was thinking. Plus, I don't even think it makes THAT much sense. Yeah he had a history w/Undertaker and the whole evil persona you mentioned, so him being involved on a peripheral level works; but since he hadn't bee onscreen or involved in the storyline at all up till that point, it wouldn't have made that much story logic either in all honesty. Granted, what we got sucked too, but looking back, just about any reveal woulda.

As depressing as Jake's failings are, references to that promo never stop being funny. I dunno what made me think to do so, but I watched that match for the first time just the other day. It was as awful as everybody had said. Good Lord. As for the Higher Power, I can appreciate the lack of options that the company might have been facing and, obviously, they didn't wanna trust Jake, but that role was perfect for somebody they wanted to make a star. Every so often, there are opportunities for guys to become stars right off of the bat. The role of Kane, for example. Glenn Jacobs ended up being terrific, but you could have foisted anybody into that role and just like that, you've got a new main eventer. In terms of longevity, would anybody have matched Jacobs? Probably not, but I think you can see what I'm saying. I think the Higher Power would have been perfect to create a new star out of nothing.

Granted, what we got sucked too, but looking back, just about any reveal woulda. Roberts has a history with Austin and McMahon. For years, he's blamed McMahon for his drug problems and Austin beat Roberts in his comeback in 1996. To me, its clear the storyline was originally supposed to be Roberts, but he didn't get clean in time and they had to scramble to use Vince as the backup plan.

I'll grant you that, but he'd be gone for what, two or more years by that point? I think the audience might not have crapped all over it, but don't think it'd have been a huge positive reaction either.

One of my earliest mark out moments was Jake Roberts facing Sid under a mask as El Diablo. The Undertaker came out with Paul Bearer and handed "Diablo" a case which the audience would assume was money. As Taker and Sid got ready to fight Diablo rushed back into the ring and helped Taker beat down Sid. He took off his mask and revealed himself as Roberts before opening the case which wasn't a case of money, but a king F'ING cobra.
Heel Jake Roberts was amazing.

It would have made no sense and been putting someone completely unreliable in a very important spot. Sure Austin beat him but it was Vader's fault that he had no chance in the match. DiBiase would have made more sense honestly. He brought in Taker AND Austin. Also the last time we saw him, Austin basically said he lost on purpose to get rid of him. He had a real reason for revenge and more than enough money to pull off everything that was going on.

Guess I forgot Raw was live I'll grant you that, but he'd be gone for what, two or more years by that point? I think the audience might not have crapped all over it, but don't think it'd have been a huge positive reaction either. I'd like to think that by the time Roberts finished his first promo, the crowd would have been eating out of his hands.

The mullet and 80s mustache Jake had (and still has 30 years later) is scary enough.

I was there that night, actually. Probably the youngest one in my section, swearing up and down to people that it had to be Vince. I don't really know why I thought that, since it was stupid kayfabe-wise, but I guess I had gotten into that mindset of "it's going to be the least expected person." I remember a couple of guys older than me telling me they had ideas of Jake the Snake, Mike Tyson (one guy swore by this), and Shane.

I remember back in those days how people wanted it to be Jake Roberts when I was reading message board, I really was expecting the Snake at that point and was pissed when it was revealed that the Higher Power was Vince.

Roberts would have been awesome. All kinds of sense. History with Taker, history with Austin. He could have taken offense to the Austin 3:16 thing and taken it down the evil path.
Million Dollar Man would have made sense. Evil money. THe history with bringing Taker in and Fake Taker, bringing Austin in....plus equating money with evil and being the higher power would have been cool.
Brother Love would have been cool too. Love was Taker's first manager. He could have come back completely different and kind of implied he sold his soul. He would have really played up the money-grubbing evil preacher angle and pissed the fans off.
Vince killed the angle dead.

Roberts would have been a Heroes-of-Wrestling level disaster.
I know she can't cut promos, but I still would have stuck with Linda, since she was under the hood the night Austin first looked under it. Just have her cut one quick promo about how she's tired of the inmates running the asylum and Vince running around with "The Union", then don't have her talk again. Just have the Corporate Ministry carry her around on a platform, worship her, etc... from that point on.
At least it wouldn't have been Vince, and as has been covered repeatedly, Jake wasn't nearly in the condition to be able to do it, either.
Not that it wouldn't have been funny as hell for coked up "You got 21? I got 22!" Jake to be revealed there, swinging his snake between his legs.

Roberts would have been a Heroes-of-Wrestling level disaster. To be fair, I'm assuming most of us are well aware that Jake wasn't in any shape to be the center of such a major angle and were fantasy-booking a scenario involving a clean, healthy Jake Roberts.

Sadly, that's pretty much the case. Could have been huge, but Roberts demons got in the way.
