I would say it was a coincidence to be honest, just because a black guy did one thing, and this black guy does another doesn't equate racism. They're taking the situation that happened in real life, but they're going back with Pope's gimmick of taking money he's supposed to be donating, and using it for dog fighting. They obviously based it on the Michael Vick thing, but I'm not seeing the racism thing.
They're both black, that's the only thing I'm seeing. I think it may've been, what other things could this man use the money he's stealing for, instead of, well, he's black, obviously he's gonna be into dog fighting like this other black guy was.

So TNA did exactly what I feared they were going to do with the Pope. He's now basically a crook. Since he took money from people saying he's going to use it to do some good but instead is using it for his own personal gain.
Also the fact that the implied that he might be into dog fighting as well was just tasteless to me.

I just want to know why a formerly-knife-wielding crazed Samoan is acting as the voice of reason and morality.

This is probably the most racist gimmick in the last 5 years. What? It may be ridiculous, but how on earth is it racist? Are you saying that Black people are not allowed to be shown doing anything bad? He's doing these things because he is a heel, not because he is black. If they want to show a black wrestler doing something bad, why not have him do something like beat someone up? Why does he have to engage in dogfighting or crime? It's lazy in 2010 but it doesn't matter. I guess I'll just have to say F' TNA for the time being. Pope is talented and charismatic and they had a good thing going with him but as usual they dropped the ball. It wouldn't be so bad if entertainment in this country (my experience is the United States) didn't have a history of promoting stereotypes of black people being criminals all the time.

That never occured to me, like, I don't want to put myself over and say, oh, I don't see colour, or something like that. But, I just thought, well, the preacher is doing illegal things and taking the money and using it for other things. I actually equated it to tv preachers who take money from people for their own purposes. Like, yeah, the gimmick is kinda stupid and over the top, but again, people are attributing malice to where I don't think it belongs. This idea that it's because he's black I got from this thread.

I don't see the reason he should be turned heel... he was one of, if not the most over people at the House show I just got back from.

I don't think there's any true racism involved but wrestling has a long tradition of 'un-PC' gimmicks and storylines, and black and latino wrestlers who turn heel have a high tendency to suddenly become ghetto thugz4life. Hell its why I briefly loved Cena when he first arrived, as a comedic twist on the trope.
The corrupt televangelist idea i hadn't thought of actually.
Regardless, its a stupid plot move.
