Why in the early 1990s fans in both WWF and WCW felt it needed to chant that whenever a black wrestler came out? Even if they were a heel, you can hear a faint Whoomp chant. It was worse in WCW then WWF, but come on, seems strange and almost racist that all Black guys need that chanted.

WCW in like mid 1993. Ice-Train Debuts they chant it. 2 Cold Scropio comes out they chant it. Ron Simmons comes out they chant it. Harlem Heat comes out they chant it. THere are times where thats all that can be herd. This was at the WCW Saturday night taping so it could just be that crowd.

"Whoomp (There It Is)" was a huge hit for the rap group Tag Team--maybe the group's name had something to do with it? I only remember this in WCW, which would make sense considering Tag Team was from Atlanta, GA. At a 1993 Clash of Champions the cameras pointed to a fan with a sign that read "WHOOMP (THERE IT IS)" and the announcers acknowledged it. Jesse (reading the sign): Whoomp, There It Is. Tony: Boy, that's everywhere.

"Whoomp There It Is" = "Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?" = "Did I do that" = "Sit on it".
It was happenin' at the time.

I don't remember it much in WCW, but I'm pretty sure that Oscar used to encourage the crowds to chant it at Men on A Mission. The rap he did was something like:
"Throw ya hands in the air, and wave em like you just don't care If you're ready to get busy with Men on a Mission say "Whoomp there it is!"

I wish that when a white wrestler came out that the crowd would chant, "Ice ice baby!" Or when a Hispanic guy would come out, they would chant, "Rico! Suave!"

wasn't Teddy Long pushing that saying hardcore in WCW at one point? and all the wrestlers mentioned had some sort of connection to him.

But I'm pretty sure he did the "whoomp there it is" line a few times.

Like it has been said, the song was hugely popular at the time. When they first came to WWF and was using the instrumental track with having Oscar 'rapping' over it, he did use to mix it up with a few "Whoomph There It Is" in it now and then. I'm 99% sure that Mabel even had a jacket with "whoomph there it is" on it, but I can't seem to find any pictures atm. The WWF magazine around the time also had it in there.

I'm pretty sure I remember Mabel having "Whoop There it is" on the bib of his ring outfit a couple of times.

Well after all, the makers of that song were named TAG TEAM.
