A benchmark for the Attitude Era was probably how many times they could say "ass" on TV, which was still pretty strong by the WWF's standards just a couple of years before.
So when was the first time someone said "ass" on a WWF programme? I know that Austin said it at KOTR 96, but I think it might have been Goldust or someone that said it first.

I'm sure it had to be uttered in the 70's or 80's at one point.

Jake Roberts told Miss Elizabeth that "If you wanted to save his ass, you better beg" in late 1991. Can't say it was the first time though.

I can't recall. Though I do recall the Mountie giving the cops the finger when they fingerprinted him after he lost the Jail House Match to Boss Man at SummerSlam 91. Also, his cell mate asking if he liked leather.
Totally implying the Mountie was in for some lovin'.

Interesting thread. I can't believe I've never wondered this before. I find it really cool that there was an "ass" uttered in 1991.

During a Rick Rude IC title defense (I think), Roddy Piper walked to the ring and mooned him.
Afterwards, Rude lost the title (I think) and cut an angry promo on Piper, saying HIS ASS!!! a couple times.

First time I recall it being said distinctively was actually Warrior saying he was gonna kick Lawler's ass in the infamous "ha promo" before KotR.

I have a gut feeling that whomever said it on WWF TV first, it was Roddy Piper. In the family friendly days of yore, only he could get away with it.

I'm kind of thinking that the WWF wasn't quite as family friendly in the 80's as the IWC likes to claim it was. A lot of the stuff that happened back then would have been unheard of for 2010 WWE.

In one of Boss Man's promos on Nailz, he says, "I'm kicking your ass!" with "ass" being bleeped. That was a huge shock to me at the time.

I'm not sure about "ass", but I remember Mr. Perfect calling the British Bulldog a "son of a bitch" loudly during a 1991 match on Coliseum video (WWF's Hottest Matches, I think).

To think all this happened before Diesel gave Undertaker the finger at Royal Rumble 1996, and even then the WWF had to profusely apologize for this "horrendous act of disrespect". Didn't stop them from showing it in digitized form numerous times.

And at Survivor Series a few months before that, Diesel clearly mouthed "Motherf***er" after he lost to Bret.

Funny enough, I'm watching Roddy Piper's Greatest Hits (the Coliseum Video release from the mid-80's) There an exclusive Piper's Pit where Piper interviews...himself. Interviewee Piper says "I've just been the cat's ass". Interviewer Piper replied "I don't know if you can say that."

The main bad cursing i remember hearing and going "wait a minute, he can't say that" was when Bret Hart went on his tirade. He shoved down McMahon on Raw then went on with his cuss filled promo using ever word but the F bomb. I was 13 or 14 at the time and I was shocked! Of course I thought it was the coolest shit ever hearing him cuss on live TV so...

I remember this tape for two things. 1) Cowboy Bob visits the doctor. 2) "This is what I think of Rock N' Roll!!!!" *Breaks Guitar, Flips The MSG Crowd Off, Laughs* - Roddy Piper.

And at Survivor Series a few months before that, Diesel clearly mouthed "Motherf***er" after he lost to Bret. Survivor Series 90 had Bret rolled up for a pin and as soon as the ref hit 3, the camera panned to Bret's face where he could very clearly mouth a very angry, "f***!"
