As Heenan said "Jesse has had more sleepless nights about Hulk Hogan than he has had about the state of Minnesota." There's 3 rumors i've heard about why Jesse hates Hogan. 1) The unions things as mentioned above. 2) When Jesse was signing a new contract with Vince he asked that he be paid royalties for using his voice and likeness on the Colliseum video releases. Vince argued that no one else had that in their contract and so Jesse signed the contract. And then Jesse found out Hogan got paid for his likeness and voice being on Colliseum videos. So Jesse left WWF for WCW. This is somewhat supported by the fact that when WWE released that "Hits & Misses of Mick Foley" DVD in the early 00's in one of the matches Foley had with Vader in WCW, all of Jesse's commentary was edited out so it appeared Tony was just talking to himself. 3) According to Heenan, Jesse wanted to be the next Billy Graham. And Jesse idolised Graham. Then Graham dubbed Hogan the next Billy Graham and Jesse resented Hogan for that which lead to everything else. Again, these are all rumors. Those are all true as far as I know. What I mean is, others have confirmed them inside the wrestling business. Number 2 is totally true though, it is why Jesse's commentary is missing from a ton of releases the WWE has done. It's a fun game of mine to listen for where they f***ed up and left a piece of Jesse commentary in. Usually just a word or two. ---------------------- I was watching Survivor Series 87 yesterday and there is just a little more venom in his voice when he runs down Hogan. I am convinced Jesse actually believes all the things he said about him during his matches. Jesse made no bones about being a Hart Foundation, Savage or Rude fan, but would still give most of the faces props when they did something intelligent in the match.

No
If anything, it made me wish that Jesse actually would challenge Hogan

Yeah, Jesse couldn't "legit" bury Hogan because of how hugely popular he was. But I think if he'd been around in '92, Jesse's routine coulda done more damage, as the fanbase was kinda waning on Hogan then.

I always wonder what would have happened if Jesse stayed with WCW into the late 1990's when Hogan turned heel. Would he become pro-Hogan, or remain anti-Hogan?

I would see him as a Bobby Heenan "I told you so" type. As for Jesse at Survivor Series' he really could point out how Hogan took cheap shots or got cheap victories. 87 he gets counted out and cheap shots Andre, crowd loves it of course because it's Hogan and a heel. 88 both Twin Towers are eliminated by non-pinfall, probably to save them, but it's a cheap win with just pinning Haku at the end. 89 both Powers of Pain and Zeus are disqualified and he pins Dibiase. Gotta love "because they beat up Hogan too" and the tone of Jesse's voice when Powers of Pain were eliminated. If Jesse played the politics game in Wrestling he could have had a major Hogan or Michaels-like position for how good he was but hopefully he made the best decision for himself and his family. He has a legacy and hasn't done any damage to it.

He just called it like he saw it, and Hogan was a bit of a cheater and cry-baby at times.

I can see him acting more or less neutral,,until rude joins in 97. Then jesse would probably be more like "if hogan thinks rude is a great addition to the nwo, i may have to change my tune". Of course, when the 1999 face turn happens, jesse would go back to being anti-hogan (we're assuming jesse doesnt become Governor of Minnesota here).

I think Ventura would have continued to bury Hogan with comments along the line that the Outsiders didn't need him, that Hogan was a glory-hound and has-been trying to latch on to the latest thing.etc.

As much as I love Jesse, I can't watch the Wrestlemania V Main Event between Hogan and Savage without cringing. Jesse absolutely lays into Hogan throughout that match. I know Jesse was always singing the praises of Savage, so he's bound to root for him in the match (regardless of being a face or heel) but he really goes too far and it takes away from what is a good match. Essentially what you're saying is that if WWE has been consistent in muting Ventura's commentary that they do for other DVD's, the Mega Powers Collide match would be enjoyable to you. Not being smarky here at all, but that's just a thought that occurred to me. I still think it would be a good match without it and as I love Jesse, I would be very pissed off if I bought a PPV and his commentary was edited out. But if you listen to the commentary on that match, he really does lay into Hogan a hell of a lot more than he normally does. Speaking of Wrestlemania V, I love that after they show a No Holds Barred trailer Jesse gets bent out of shape that Hogan has made a film and is trying to "invade his territory". Shame Jess is actually in the film, so you'd think he would know Hogan was making it.

I think he did at certain times. If you watch the WM 5 match with Savage, Jesse definitely sounds like he has an axe to grind.

After the Hogan/Warrior match, he did say he thinks Hulkamania will live forever, so it couldn't have been that bad.

the lawsuit thing is partially true. Vince told Jesse that only featured performers were getting royalties. while Hogan was one of those featured guys, he wasn't the only one got was getting royalties as a featured player. but meanwhile many of the guys were getting it even when they weren't considered featured guys. so Jesse felt he lost out on a lot of cash since he was all over those tapes doing announcing.
I remember Jim Ross making reference to him winning his lawsuit on a WCW PPV. I believe he called Jesse the real Million Dollar Man or something to that effect.

Compared to how Cole treats Daniel Bryan on commentary nowadays Ventura's stuff, whilst edgy, with Hogan was tame.
If anything I was recently watching SUMMERSLAM '90 again and if you want to hear a pre Michael Cole commentator uncomfortably burying a wrestler listen to Roddy Piper's comments on the Ultimate Warrior during the Rick Rude match.

According to Bret's book, Warrior kept a Make-A-Wish family waiting backstage at a show, ordered backstage personnel to have them moved (because he needed to be "in the zone" before he hit the ring), and supposedly blew the kid off. If that was known among the boys in the back, that would explain HotRod's animosity.
As much as Bret trashes Hogan, one of the few things he praises him for was Hogan's tireless visits with Make-A-Wish kids.

If Jesse really did 'bury' Hogan in a way that went beyond his kayfabe duties, he wouldn't be there.
Hogan had MORE than enough sway back them to remove a commentator from television if he felt undermined/upset by him.
I don't think Ventura did anything other than play the heel commentator. Heenan has been anti-Hogan over the years yet the two were always good friends.
