I think I was. My family didn't have cable, we didn't have a computer, my clothes weren't that great, I couldn't afford school lunches(my cold lunches weren't much better), I couldn't buy whatever playground fad there was, and during the 32/64-bit era all we had was an NES.
I always felt left out because of it. I wonder if it impacted me negatively?

Yep I was. Better for it too. Damn right. You learn how to "deal with it" I attribute my success to learning how to make the most of jack squat when I was a child.

Yeah. Unfortunately, my family weren't poor, but didn't stop us having no computer or cable, giving me cold lunches, and dressing me cheaply.
At least I wasn't like 'Spudey' Davis - he had newspaper curtains.

I remember being really really young and finding monopoly money. I gave it to my mom thinking she lost a food stamp.
Now that I've typed that out, I'm really really depressed about my childhood.

No but I can only imagine what it would be like and I'm sure kids get picked on for it which is terrible.

If you were a poor kid then that is your business and I hope you made it through... although I wouldn't say I cared for a certain thing that poor kids tended to do.
I call it "Poor kid lying." It's when poor kids lie in any number of ways to make themselves not look poor. For example they'll say they own this or that, or there parents own this or that and it's always something expensive you KNOW they don't have. This poor kid I went to high school with named Glen Oliver did this to a ridiculous extent.
He was in my guitar class in high school and this where he really looked bad. If there is one area of music you don't want to tell lies in, it is the guitar. Worse he lied about his equipment. People that play guitar will know you are lying and tear you up.
Every day he would come in with one of those crappy guitars they sell at the front area of Wal-Mart. If there was ever unwritten laws in guitar etiquette one of them should be "You don't buy one of those crappy guitars they sell at the front of department stores." Anybody who is considering playing guitar seriously knows you DON'T play one of those. You are not even supposed to look at those. Other people that play REAL guitars laugh at people that play those.
Anyways, at any given time he would tell us this ridiculous lie saying it was worth all this money. EVERY week, day , or month his stupid fictional value would change. One day it was worth 900 and 5 weeks later it was worth 2000.
Everyone would rip him up too even the casual guitar players.
They'd say things like "Get out of here Glen. No one wants to hear about the value of your crappy guitar. "
Poor people should be real about their situation. Don't lie. It never helps.

Yeah, I was the poor kid in my school. It's even worse when you're slightly overweight and was diagnosed with autism.

I was a poor kid growing up until junior high. My parents couldn't afford me playing hockey. What most people don't understand about my fathers profession is that you don't become mega rich or even rich at all during the first ten years of work. So kids thought I was rich when we really were dirt poor during the time.

It was a poor school. We were all poor kids. Everyone watching each other's back. No one better than anyone else. That's what brought us together.

I heard that Pele transferred out of your school system after one day, when his grapefruit turned out to not be just for lunch.

I lived with farm vision and 56k for a while but other than that I was doing okay and my parents raised me right and I'm proud to pay for my own internet because as of right now my parents are rich and are building a new living room bigger than my apartment. I think the real poor kids are the ones who were raised in broken homes where parents never taught them right from wrong and were just plain neglectful. Then those kids are struggling in school, get into a ton of trouble then it becomes worse for them when they are adults. I've seen a lot of those cases, including my closest friends.

I wore the same dress shirt for both 6th and 7th grade class photos because that was the only dress shirt I owned. I was picked on a lot for that.
My family had some rough times, especially in my middle school years. I was too young to understand, but once I grew older I figured it out.
This era was the age when kids all around me suddenly refused to wear clothes that weren't "name brand" with logos plastered everywhere. While the "cool kids" were wearing Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Kline, I was wearing "cheap" clothes bought at the local department store, and sneakers came from Payless Shoes. Of course this led to me hating my parents for making me go to school to get picked on, which I'm sure didn't help their matters any.
We also didn't get a computer until high school, and it was a piece of crap 66mhz, but it was wonderful.

I went to a poor school district so all of us, with a few exceptions below and above the line were poor. I never wanted for anything but was envious of those that had a little money.
And to the poster that called out "poor kid lying" I heard it too...from kids that were worse off than I was. Was it BS? Sure. But they lived in an honest to goodness tarpaper shack. I can imagine they had to pump themselves up somehow and it will screw with your sense of self-worth.
