Hey guys. New here, been a lurker for a while now, but I gotta say, I just don't think the NCAA will have the balls to give Miami the death penalty.

Except, you know...actual rape. This is just like some other person that was on ESPN talking about the Miami situation said something like "to be honest it feels a little like 9/11" A football team possibly going down, in your eyes...feels like terrorist attacks?

But I have to agree with you. I don't think the NCAA will go through with this. Should they? Absolutely. Probably won't happen though. They still have SMU on the back of their minds, even though that was almost 30 years ago. But they have to make an example, and they have to learn the age old philosophy: Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

They really compared the Miami deal to 9/11? Ok I am a HUGE college football fan bordering on obsession but I would never make such an analogy

Same type of attitude. I get that Irvin and company are sticking up for their school, and I've got a soft spot for Mike cuz of the Dallas years, but those guys should shut the f*** up. Stop acting like the wrongdoing wasn't a two way street.

This is easily the worst thing the NCAA has had to judge. If the punishments arent' severe, it will prove the NCAA as the joke of a regulatory agency that it is. In a way, the NCAA needs to be as severe as possible with Miami, just to try to restore some of it's own credibility.

It also doesnt help the University of Miami as for years......the U has always walked a thin line with the NCAA. If even half of this is true, with Miami's past history........that may be enough to warrant a "death penalty".

Really it all depends on if the NCAA is willing to invoke the "willful violators" clause that would remove the statute of limitations on the investigation. Assuming the investigation was filed this year, they would normally only be able to look as far back as 2007, as the statute of limitations in NCAA investigations is usually 4 years, and only consider the violations in those years, if they invoke the clause, however, they could go as far back as 2002, when Shapiro said he started violating NCAA rules with his "donations" to the players.
If that is the case, it would overlap with Miami's probation early in the decade for their baseball program, that would make Miami a repeat violator, meaning they would be a valid target for the Death Penalty.

Accidentally clicked on the thread and curious about this Miami thing everyone's talking about. What's the deal there? It stems from this Yahoo! Sports report written about two days ago: sports.yahoo.com/investigations/news?slug=cr-renegade_miami_booster_details_illicit_benefits_081611Essentially, a former Miami booster detailed how he provided millions of dollars of illegal benefits to over 70+ Miami Hurricanes athletes (mainly, the football team). The benefits ranged from jewelry and parties on yachts, to prostitutes and an abortion for a stripper who was pregnant. Three things make it big: One, Miami has been known as a bit of a troublemaker and all of this happened during a period when they were on probation for other violations. Two, the booster is in jail for being part of a $900 million dollar ponzi scheme, which paid for a lot of his benefits. There's a picture of the booster and the president of the school at an event for the school, the president is holding a check donated by the booster which is filled with nothing but ponzi money. Three, the booster alleges that many coaches and members of the administration knew that this was happening, but did nothing to stop it. The booster, meanwhile, was beloved by the school, to the point that he had a lounge named after him and got to lead the team onto the field for home games and stand on the sidelines with them.

Condsidering all the garbage happening when Irvin was at "The U" he really doesn't have a leg to stand on. This. When I read Irvin's comments all I could translate was Irvin saying, "damn Nevin, why weren't you around when I was in school?!"
