Its been going on since 2009 in my own opinion - and if its not intentional by WWE (which is a very good possibility) its cool how everything is fitting together so nicely.
The first encounter with Shawn Michaels highlighted just how big the steak had gotten in terms of scale, by far it was the closet match in the streaks history - meaning to show that Undertakers time was in deed coming to a close.
Next year in 2010 - the second match with Shawn was fully centred on his retirement, rightfully. Don't forget however that Shawn became obsessed with the streak - not even his best friend HHH could talk him out of it.
As Shawn says in his hype video for HHH/Undertaker, those last two years, the streak was that close to ending.
So Shawn got retired - and it angered Triple H because it showed him that maybe that meant his time was coming. One thing was certain to The Game though, if he had to go out, he wanted to be the last of the old guard still standing.
But he failed.
The match was built around Triple H's quote:
"You have only one thing left...and its the streak...and when it dies...you die, and if I can't end it...then I'll die trying"
This, however, became to be hollow words. Triple H said it himself the night after Wrestlemania 27:
"That undefeated streak has become everything to him, its bigger than anything...he's willing to absolutely destroy himself to keep it in tact."
The point remains however that Undertaker got a lucky win. Triple H had him beat. It was that damn close. The match wasn't as good, but Triple H came even closer than Shawn.
So the motivation for Taker this year is to show everyone that he is not quite done, he wants to hit 20-0 with a decisive win over HHH (possibly retiring him and possible with Shawn Michaels involved.)
I believe Undertaker will reach 20-0 and I believe that match will also be against HHH. But the match will clearly show Undertaker's time has all but run out. He should be done.
But he'll return for Wrestlemania 29. You see its not that will he make it to 20-0 which is the scary risk match for the streak. To me, its will he reach 21-0 (which signifies a new decade of destruction) or will he push it to far and be defeated for 20-1.
