For me, the answer is simple: HBK. I have never seen a bad Shawn Michaels match. Also, I have never seen myself begging for any of his segments to end, which is HIGH praise from me.

It's so hard to compare the greatest. I think it's kind of like music, once a band or singer is great, it really comes down to personal preference. How can you say a one great band is better than another when they're performing in a different way?

Chris Jericho and not because of I'm still nostalgic about his return. For the past year before Jericho came back, every time Punk said "Best in the World" I always thought "...till Jericho comes back".

It's all personal preference but Shawn Michaels is the best all around that I've ever seen.

From 1984-1990 I'd have to go with Hulk Hogan. He wasn't the greatest pure wrestler, but he put more people in the seats than anyone else. He was the best SPORTS ENTERTAINER in the world.
Steve Austin is another one that I think could lay claim to that title from probably 1998-2001.
I know that most of you went with the best workers, but the whole point of wrestling is to draw people and sell tickets. You could be the best worker of all time, but if no one wants to watch you then you aren't the best in the world. The best in the world is the one that draws the most money.

I guess what I meant was the best pure wrestler. It doesn't matter if you're Kurt Angle as a pure wrestler, if you no one wants to watch you than you can't be the best in the world. It was more to illustrate my point that you don't have to be the greatest technical wrestler to be considered the Best Pro Wrestler in the World.

It was more to illustrate my point that you don't have to be the greatest technical wrestler to be considered the Best Pro Wrestler in the World. All interesting points and a great discussion. I look at it by the "asses in seats" argument. In the 80s, I went to see WWF shows for Savage and Hogan. In the 90s it was Rock and Austin. I saw a WWE card in San Jose in 2003 because I wanted to see Eddie, Lesnar and Benoit. This decade I've only gone to see TNA (because I'd never seen Angle in person and he is one of my all time favorites) because no one in WWE jumps out to me as a big star. Don't get me wrong, I truly enjoy Punk's work, as well as Jericho and many others. But no one right now screams out BITW (even if they're screaming out BITW). I guess my point is that part of wrestling's problem is that for the WWE to sell tickets anymore, people will buy tickets for the attraction and spectacle of WWE. It's just another form of entertainment. Vince and co know that they're guaranteed money just showing up somewhere because there are WWE fans out there who will spend money on the product no matter what. Vince doesn't need a true best in the world to make the safe money. But think back to wrestling's hot periods and there was always that transcendent star who casual fans and hardcore fans alike connect with. Hogan, Austin, Goldberg, etc. Maybe if we had a true BITW then he would be clear to everyone. And wrestling would be a Hell of a lot of fun again.
