Jesse and Festus were portrayed as simple Southerners. As someone from the South, I can confirm that for many, many decades, these people have had things like biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Traditionally in the south, families believed in eating big breakfasts with things like bacon and eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, etc. The phrase "biscuits and gravy made me a man" seems like a play on some of the beliefs of this generation of Southern people. I'd say times have changed quite a bit in the South over the last two decades. This topic reminds me of a Southern comedian's routine "Grease, Gravy, and John Wayne's Momma" which talks about the type of people mentioned in the song "Biscuits and Gravy."

Because I'm originally a Kentuckian, I have a family full of hicks, yet NOBODY in my family eats biscuits and gravy.
Separately, yes, but never together. I've never seen that in my life.

Huh. Because I'm originally a Kentuckian, I have a family full of hicks, yet NOBODY in my family eats biscuits and gravy. Separately, yes, but never together. I've never seen that in my life. Have you been to a restaurant? Seriously, not being a smart ass here.

From Chicago and far, far from a hick but biscuits and gravy are delicious. It's not a Southern thing per se as more of a fat guy thing. You make the gravy with grease for gods sake. AND IT'S DELICIOUS.

Alas no, they're either named after the after the former royal French house of Bourbon, or the Spanish royal house of Borbon, depending on which source you choose to believe. And the only time I've ever had bicuits and gravy was in northern Washington state, so it's definitely not exclusively southern.

AND IT'S DELICIOUS. But I'm not fat.... lol. Almost all of your chain restaurants like IHOP & Denny's have them. I encourage anyone who hasn't tried them to seek them out and have them at least once. I don't eat them anymore more because I have a very specific breakfast order every time: A little mom & pop breakfast shop near me has what's called the Meat Eaters Omelet. Three eggs, cheddar cheese, bacon, ham, & sausage. Unf***ingbelievable! I always get it with Greek toast & hash browns that I put A1 sauce on. Other breakfast joints I go to, I just ask them to make the omelet that way. I never used to eat hash browns until a friend's wife told me about putting A1 on them. Makes it seem like you are having steak and eggs. Just like the omelet, unf***ingbelievable! Breakfast is my absolute favorite meal of the day, even if I don't eat it in the morning, and the breakfast I just mentioned is my favorite food in the world. Sorry for if I derailed this into a breakfast thread. ;D No I'm not ;D

I didn't know Biscuits & Gravy was an actual type of food until I read this thread. I always thought it was just random words in a song and featured gravy like you have with your turkey or pork along with Custard Creams or a pack of Digestives.
It does actually sound nice though.

I'm not a hillbilly/redneck/country boy whatsoever, but I do live in the south...and I absolutely love biscuits and gravy. I miss working night shift at the hotel and having an endless supply of it to snack on throughout the night

Not big on gravy, but yeah, it's a pretty big thing.
Sidenote, they missed the boat (the gravy boat?) by not giving Festus an Ed gimmick. Jesse could've been Eddy, and they could have recruited, I dunno, Curt Hawkins to be Edd.

I am on the other side of the fence: I didn't realize other parts of the U.S. DIDN'T know about biscuits and gravy. I grew up with fast-food restaurants like Hardees and chain restaurants like Cracker Barrel (and of course local restaurants) offering biscuits and gravy. Typically when you see biscuits and gravy in a restaurant, it will be white gravy, but sometimes families might use brown gravy, depending on what the family was cooking.

I used to work for a restaurant chain based in Ohio called Bob Evans. It's all over the place east of the Mississippi. Before I worked there, I couldn't stand the sight of biscuits and gravy. After trying their sausage gravy once, it was like crack. I could seriously eat that stuff like soup, and I know this is weird, but I tear up my biscuits and drop them in the gravy instead of putting the gravy over the biscuits. That stuff stuck with you, too. But, yeah, it's not just a Southern thing, but at the same time, the line between Southern and Appalachian Country is a very thin one.

They serve Biscuits and Gravy at IHOP with a side of hash browns. It's southern cuisine, but it's everywhere. Hell, I'm from the west coast and I LOVE that stuff.
